YES Karen, EEs would be great! I love that their grown-up appearance is always a bit of a surprise. I don't have any 'lofty' goals for my flock. I'm hoping to simply end up with 10-15 colorful birds that are friendly (enough) and that lay a rainbow of eggs. I started with 2 each of: speckled sussexs & sl wynadottes, 1 EE & 1 black copper marans. The marans turned out to be a roo & the EE lays brown eggs.
So my rainbow is just a narrow range of tan-brown right now.

Your roo is gorgeous! Does he pass along those lovely 'oddities'? Would there be any chance of getting a couple of EEs that are old enough to have some idea of their sex?

well, i won't be setting anything to hatch until mid march, but they should be good guesses at 6-8 weeks i would think...

we're taking a long weekend vacation end of march, so i don't want anything hatching or in the brooders while i'm gone. my hay guy will open and close coops for me and check water lvels, but at 80+ i don't want him doing anything more.

Anyone near Glen Allen with any extra egg laying hens? would love an SL Wyandotte, silkie, frizzle, americana or araucana, polish (a.k.a the David Bowie or Phyllis Diller), Maran or other some such pretty bird.

Quick question...I'm interested in getting a big bird or two, like a Delaware or jersey giant but am concerned about if my tractor is big enough. I have a Barred Rock roo who fits fine. Are they much larger than the BR? Could I introduce a young roo to the flock or is one roo the limit? I ask because I'm thinking of getting a giant breed roo for our first endeavor into culling for food. The roo we have now was obtained in a trade with a friend and is really quite docile and pretty gentle on our girls, so wanna keep him around.

Don't you also have BLRWs? As Spring gets closer we'll have to get together. If you're not able to get to the swap, maybe I can day-trip up your way and pick up a box of babies.

Quote: well, it's only poodle now... I lost Shadow back in November to an apparent stroke...

and i'm not sure what i'll be driving at this time, as hubby totalled my truck the day after Christmas. he's ok, the truck isn't... so now we try and figure out what the vehicle situation is.

Oh no! So sorry about Shadow and the truck. So glad that your hubby is ok though.

I was editing my post as you were typing... We'll make plans closer to May.

there's plenty of time till then... are you looking for chicks, started pullets, etc? purebred ameraucana, araucana, or easter eggers?

easter egger chicks, i can do that... and creatively at that. LOL

my EE roo is an oddity. he's crested and feather footed to boot. there's some silkies back a ways in his lineage i think. he's essentially semi-splash laced -ish? lol

i've also got 4 girls, each very pretty and unique IMO.

i can also produce dorking/ee crosses. usually have 5 toes, fast growing and LARGE, if you want something you can also eat down the road LOL...

here are some pics...
Weeble, the roo
