Quote: I was the one with tent set up with table and cage underneath, and the fugliest truck there. LOL you didn't stop by and say hi! or did you and I didn't know it?

as far as contagion, that's one reason I don't tend to wander the swaps and handle others. i'll go thru and see who's got what but that's usually it.

I didn't stay long actually. We had to be at our farmer's market but was able to squeeze some time in early. Unfortunately, after I saw the horrible bird(s) on maybe the 2nd or 3rd vendor or so; I just packed it in. I may try again next month; more for browsing than buying and will make a point to stop by when I'm not leaving the s/o to the labor of the market. ;)

honestly, I am now paranoid about any adult birds. I would only bring home chicks (preferably that haven't been with adult birds) or eggs for hatching. it is just safer.

So today when I gave my broody mama her treat of meal worms and wheat grass I noticed her comb and wattles are extremely dull. She is on day 10 but was broody for 8-9 days prior to me getting her eggs. Is this common for broody mama??

i'd just keep an eye on her... she may not be drinking enough and may be a bit dehydrated... I don't feed/water in the coops so my girls all come running for breakfast and again in the afternoon for a snack. at bedtime their crops are a little bit of food and a lot of liquid (noticed when i'm collecting eggs and need to pick them up off the nest for a second.

(any nasty broodies get launched tail first out of the house... they learn FAST that biting is not acceptable).

She is super sweet, I will make sure she drinks some more. She is on day 11, I so want to candle but I only want to do it once and I have been tryingto wit until day 14

Candled! 7 of 8 eggs are developing well

last one had no progress and when I cracked it open the yolk was scrambled

The silkie my friend wound up with from the Christiansburg swap didn't improve. Tried vitamin therapy, treating for parasites, etc. They took her today to the state agriculture services to have her euthinized and a necropsy. Hopefully nothing that could have potentially infected his flock. Will post results when they get them. Whatever the outcome, the seller obviously and knowingly sold a sick bird which is insane. Results of that practice obviously hurt profits of more ethical sellers since it puts a general swap meet fear into the rest of us. It's unfortunate these things aren't somehow governed.

^ that is frustrating that someone would try to pawn off a sick chicken. It could have taken out the whole flock.

My multitasking fail for the day: dont forget you have eggs in your pockets when you start trying to do other chores...broken eggs in both pockets not cool at all

I've done that.
