I went this afternoon! Oh my!! I did good! Only got 6 this trip. Lol. 1 each Delaware, Light Brahma, spotted Sussex, partridge rock, gold-laced Cochin and a Barnevelder. They're precious!

You're cooking them... that's way too hot.

Okay. Thanks for the suggestions. I've only done this once before. I have it pointed more towards one end so it's a tad cooler on the other. No huddling but no panting. They're already eating like crazy. Drinking good. Seem very content. I'll keep an eye on temps. It's so great to have little ones again! Sure hope one of mine goes broody soon. Never hatched my own.

just thought I'd pass it along, if anyone hasn't come across it yet... I went 4 places looking for pine shavings! apparently the distributor or manufacturer (don't remember which) burned down, so at least in the Roanoke area, the only place I've found ANY shavings was at Southern States in Roanoke. and they only had 1 pallet left when I was there.

TSC (Roanoke and c'burg) were both out, as was southern states in c'burg and another local feed store I tried... with no idea when they'd get more. so that 5 bales of shavings I bought cost me almost 100 miles of gas.. should have just gone to my regular place (rke SS) but thought I'd save some miles since c'burg is closer... LOL yeah right!

oh also, Roanoke SS is taking orders for day old chicks (asst breeds) ducklings & 16-18 week old pullets (sexlinks) for delivery (in store) early april.
Thanks for the head's up. I got 3 bales… this warmer weather is giving me spring fever and I am so ready to clean out the deep litter to our garden spot and start over. All this snow has soaked my "free" litter options of leaves and pine straw.

The chick order got my attention too… especially the started pullets. Hmm… Anyone ever get those before? I could care less about breed or purebred or not, I just want chickens that lay eggs and have some sense. I think they said the started pullets are a mix of RIR and ???
