Virginia

Good Morning Virginia! How'd everyone make out yesterday? We got 1/4" of ice then 3" of snow. Worst part is the 13 degree temp this morning!! Hope everyone and their flocks are good!

Here in NW Goochland County we got about 6 inches...I think. The wind blew so much that I couldn't get an accurate measurement of the snow...2 inches in one spot, 12 inches in another. Woke up this morning and our weather station's thermometer said it was 5.8 degrees outside. I just put my five 8 week-old chicks out in the unheated coop 3 days ago. I was so afraid when I opened the coop door that I'd see a pile of dead chicks. But nope, they were just fine! Complaining, though, because they wanted some water that WASN'T a solid block of ice! I wasn't worried about my flock of older birds...they've made it through this winter just fine, and we've had temps this low before this season. And my doelings (2 Boer cross girls, about 10 months old) were fine too...yelling for their grain as usual, but just fine!

Saw this yesterday and it's Oh-So-True about Virginia. Well, at least it keeps us from getting bored! Minus 2 degrees this morning.

The girls aren't happy - won't come out of the coop because of the snow we got yesterday - but they all seem to be doing well.

Lol I saw this on FB yesterday and had to share it on my page!

Well...I have to say that THAT was an adventure...thank goodness we have a 4WD vehicle! There was only 4 inches but solid ice underneath. Our car doors were frozen shut. Should have thought to bring some hot water down to the car with us but I wasn't hiking 1/4 mile back up the hill to get some. DH managed to get his open and then we had to kick the rest open from the inside because the handles seemed too flimsy to really pull on as hard as it would have taken. Ah the joys of winter. but I still love Virginia....

But I am now sitting comfy and safe at work with my coffee and oatmeal thrilled for modern conveniences like central heat!!!!!!

Anybody know of a hatchery that has a lower minimum order requirement? I'm having a hard time finding the breeds I want and I don't want any more then 6 chicks. I've tried Murray McMurray, strombergs chickens, privett hatchery and cackle hatchery. I'd rather go with a recommended hatchery if I can.

I think Ideal will send a lower quantity, but they do have a $25 minimum order and will tack on charges if you choose different breeds. They also may send packing peanuts.
