if anyone's interested in the sfh trios/pairs that I have (hatched oct/nov) let me know... I've got some people locally also asking about them as well, but thought I'd give you guys first crack. I can deliver to Gilmanor, that's still in the plans, but I really need to thin out some of the pens. I just banded 24 chicks last night 1-3 weeks old) and have another 15+ new hatches that will get banded in a week or 2...

I have a friend in Loudoun county that is looking to give away 7 light brahma hens, ranging in age from 1.5 to 5 years old. He tells me that his flock is very healthy. My light brahma hens are terrific layers. I just do not have room in the coop for more chickens. Let me know if you are interested in getting any number of them.

Hey Everyone! I have a 2 week old barred rock and she is very much a "lap" bird. I have been having social time between my 3 2wk chicks and my 3 4wk chicks. I can tell she is at the bottom of the pecking order, but one of her 2 wk sisters does stick up for her. after a few minutes of "play time" she jumps on my lap or in my hand and just hangs out...should i be worried about this?

Um, uh...I believe your she is a he...
I thought I noticed that as well but since I am not an expert of Barred Rocks, I am glad someone else said it first. I have noticed with all of the breeds that I have, the boys are always the ones that jump on my lap or shoulder. The girls almost always shy away. So your she may be a he based upon behavior.

I don't have barred rocks myself but just read it on another post about someone going into TSC, looking in the "straight run" bin and seeing all male barred rocks. Males have the white dot on the head whereas females don't and the comb like that at two weeks are the tell-tale signs. I have been corrected myself on the behavior thing- what I thought were probably males due to chest bumping turned out to be females because as chicks sometimes all sexes will do that;-)

actually purebred barred rocks, the pullets have a larger white dot, while with sexlinks, the roo will (barred hen with non-barred roo)

the chick shown looks like a cockerel to me.

Well, I can only speak from my experience with my one barred rock. She started out the same size as all the other chicks I received, but they quickly out paced her in growth. She was soon our smallest chick, and also the most laid back. She napped more than the others, so my daughters started waking her up to make sure she ate enough. She seemed to be low chick on the totem pole for quite some time, and the others would always kind of push her out of the way to get to the food. Well, once we put them all out in the coop at about five weeks, her eating and confidence took off. She is now the second smallest, but seems to be high in the pecking order. She was also one of our first to mature and lay an egg.

So, who knows. Those laid back chicks can surprise you!

Oh no! I hope she is not our he....all 6 of my birds came from supposed pullet runs (the man said 90% chance of being female) our white leghorn is the one with the biggest comb so far. I am going to be soooo upset if i have to get rid of her/him!! (I already have a good home if someone turns out to be a rooster.) I am going to be devastated.....:( I thought 2 weeks was too early to tell.
