Is there anyone who breeds either locally (near RVA)? I really don't want to be nuked by packing peanuts/chicken math again...at least for a while. 

Breeds what?
I am narrowing down the breeds I raise. My Master Plan has changed greatly.
8 Runs up under the 20x41 chicken port.
1. Bresse
2. lavender / Blue English Orpingtons
3. Red English Orpingtons
4. Chocolate English Orpington Bantams
5. Australorp
6. Barred Rocks
7. Blue Laced Dk Red English Orpingtons
8. Marans
Runs still out near the barn.
1. Pheasants,
2. Cochins,
3. Phoenix Bantams,
4. Ohiki,
5. Fly-Ties.
6. Some ducks.
7. Easter eggers,
8. RIR.
9. OEGB
10. Quail
Got to stop them from going into the barn and laying those eggs.

The best buy you can get is at Tractor Supply. My son has three white leghorns that lay largest white eggs like crazy. They are his.
I think he will add some browns this Spring. Inexpensive. Funny clowns, Hardy Egg laying machines. TSC. If our local tsc dont have I will be phoning around to the TSC that does get them in.

Just a note- All TSC don't get stock from the same breeder/ hatchery - So what you get at your TSC may not be what I get at ours.
But two or three years ago I asked and the person in the store knew which hatchery theirs came from . Most of the ones then at the Southern Va store was coming out of Upper NC. And different breeds from different breeders. JFYI

Yes you are correct. And each TSC do not get the same breeds and they are constantly getting chicks March through April. I dont think they have any in Feb or May.
I do know they can flutter their wings and get out, set off the motion detectors during the night. More than once a manager has td me they had to come down at 2 am to find it was chicks on the loose setting the security system off. Sensitive security system if a chick could set it off I say.
They do sell production chicks that are heavy layers if that is what your looking for. I have heard some of these heavy layers do not lay eggs as long as some breeds and they dont live as long as some bteeds. It all depends on what one is looking for in a chicken. That is why I got the Australorp and Barred. Heavy layers that I can mix their eggs into the feed to give to all chickens. Boosting their protein intake.

Welcome, tell us about your experiences, sucesses and your failures. I dont know about everyone else but I learn from my failures as much as anything.
My daddy died young, he had a saying, Experience is a bitter teacher but a thorough teacher. I dont know where he got that saying but he was spot on.
Some things about Chickens I would never do again and some things I would welcome again. I learn from others experiences also.

that new set up we are recently working on so far has cost well over 6,000. And we have discovered that either a mouse, rat or mole has made its way in on us. Or I should say made its way in on our English Orps. No joke. All that expense on my new master plan for a metal 20x41 (Fort Chix)carport with enclosed long sides. With the two long Sides also with the matching siding that is used on the roof. 9 Doggie kennels from TSC for their runs. And onside along one side 8 customized wooden houses.

Had to buy a wood chipper for all the branches that my hubby was discarding when he cuts firewood bc to coat a floor 20x41(Fort Chix) floor 4-5 inch deep floor surface was expensive and I could make alot of wood chips for free. Well less the cost of the chipper and my time.

What would I do differently? Not add to the chicken count till I had rehomed all the others. Then build the system and then fill Fort Chix.
You can believe I will be there at the first Spring Swap flocks at TSC selling Chix mated and laying pairs. Got to find homes for them. I am feeding and cleaning small houses out and filling them With fresh straw and their watering and feeding is running me ragged bc there is so many out in hutches and pens running around all day laying eggs in the barn.

My hubby finds eggs in the tractor seat just about everyday, in the barn. We have to stop them from laying eggs in the barn, those eggs can hatch if you dont look out.
All that expense and we are chasing some kind of mouse!
