Mine have access to the pen every day. ..... although... it's JUST occured to me that the door MIGHT be frozen shut....

Didn't think about the auto door when I left before dawn this AM....

Quarterly Blood Letting, LOL, YOUR FUNNY! [....]

German Shepard mix with Chocolate Lab, and an oversized Border Collie from Texas raised for cattle ranching.

I have a port. It was my 35th birthday present, lol!!! I used to have IV infusion meds and have to have blood drawn regularly. Makes life sooooooooo much easier!!!

Love your dogs. I need a good dog, our sheltie is a gorgeous idiot -- next to useless. Hubby has forbidden another dog, but I refuse to live here without a decent one.

A good possibility. The door to our hen's private coop, it's one Agri-Supply carries, was frozen shut.

I hope the roads weren't too treacherous this morning.

:hugs No need to apologize!! I was amused. My dry humor doesn't come through very well. :(   That sucks about the lady at the show and neighbors. Why not learn something or share? I gave an egg to one neighbor yesterday.

In all seriousness, one of the neighbors said he liked my birds...actually loves the roosters crowing. I think he's glad we're not hooligans or trying to citify the place. Despite having several acres, we have five neighbors, but luckily almost all of them grew up on farms or have chickens themselves! We will see what they think when the ducks and goats show up....

On another note, Did anyone else let their chickens out today? Mine flew out of the shed and went back inside after 5-10 minutes. Even the Marans and Ameraucanas, which seem to not mind cold or rain.
I hope that I do not become complacent by moving here. My lil fam and I get away at least once a month. Most of our friends are not here (and I am from Snow Hill) A lot of people think we are weird anyway, but I am who I am. Especially, when my toddler speaks Latin and they think it is pure jibberish... Lol (part of his curriculum).
We are the only house on 169acres. My neighbours are a little far. We cannot be seen from the hwy either. One Neighbor is actually my Aunt. She admires or flock, but continues to have commercial Cornish. She also likes that we collect eggs, kill and butcher our own meat, and grow our own fruits and vegetables. But everyone thinks that it is off that we do not shopbat the grocery store. We have done all that we can to not make trips there.
I cannot wait for goats. I love goats milk and meat. I am not sure about ducks, but I do want turkeys. I have never raised ducks or turkeys alone or from chicks. I just want to be completely aware of what to expect before getting some. I want all of my animals to be happy and healthy.

Mine came out fairly quickly and stayed outside.....I was amazed. Hope to get my 4 eggs today......waiting for Jessica to hatch out her eggs.....Saturday is hatch day! I put four of our own eggs under her and I want to see what happens with them. I tried candling them twice......I'm pretty sure the phoenix egg was not fertile ......guess I will know soon. And I will check out the fb page....thnx

I finally seem to be back on this thread....not sure why I kept getting booted.....well the kindle has a touch screen and that probably explains it. I dream of a world without fb....Internet and such.....only because I am addicted and spend way too much time here.
:/

I apologise for the comment about the neighbours. I am sure that yours are wonderful people. It was more of a you rock comment. It is my lack of the proper english language at times. My neighbors are okay. It is upsetting that everyone around here decides to buy from the same places and all of the Places that sells chicks only carry 3-4 breeds. How boring. I got lucky and am very blessed that my family bred different birds. We have always had the "regulars", but every now and then it is nice to see something different. Even at the County fair there wasn't even a polish or silkie at the poultry show. Not saying that there must be, but they are common, and this shows how much we lacked in variety.
Also at the show, a lady was walking a red star on a leash. My youngest rush to ask to pet the leashed bird. The lady allowed him to. She had the nerve to tell me it was a designer breed of chicken. I wanted to die laughing. I told her that they were bred for egg production. And showed her a picture of a frizzled white laced red polish and a Silkiechin together. She told me that she could not believe that the birds existed and I must have been really good at photo shopping. I told her that they do not lay well and are raised locally. I even invited her to visit. She seemed offended by my trial to broaden her knowledge on " designer" breeds. I felt bad for offending her, but then realised it really wasn't my fault that she felt that way. Ignorance is bliss.
As for eggs and my neighbours. They do not sell them, and I have learned that they will let them rot before even sharing with anyone. There are a few really nice people with chickens around here. Just not my neighbours.

Hey, my sister walks her husband on a leash!
I dont think anyone gets upset about anything meant as a joke. We all Need a good laugh now and again. We all need a good cry now and again too. And sometimes we need to JUST vent. I just am careful not to throw insults and I would never hurt somebody deliberately SINCE I have been hurt deliberately by others I know how it feels.BUT LOVE A GOOD LAUGH NOW AND AGAIN. This thread has recently made me smile. Thank you for the smile.

Lol. You are welcome. I thought that it was funny that she thought that red stars were a "designer" chicken. It is a hybrid, but I wouldn't consider it rare or even designer. I understand that her pet Red Star is special to her, but in the "chicken world", a Red Star is nothing super special. I found it hilarious that she thought that the breed was considered to be special.

I wonder what made her think that. Maybe she equates it with a "designer" dog (aka mutt)? Especially since she had it on a leash. Was the chicken wearing a designer harness/leash with bling on it??

(Disclaimer: I'm not bashing crossbreeds - many are unique and beautiful.)

I have just been reading about composting with the chickens and can't wait to get started with it......think I will make a square with timbers and dump everything in it...just to keep it in one spot.

I sneaked and picked up jessicas eggs when she went out to eat today.....I didn't hear any peeping. It is a bit early. If nothing happens by Tuesday I am guessing that they are not going to hatch. But I hope she will get at least one or two chicks to care for since she has been so faithful to her eggs....well they are borrowed eggs but you know what I mean, they are hers even tho she didn't lay them herself.
