hatchery breeds are really not true representatives of the breed. getting birds from a local breeder or even having some shipped in is a better option. playing around with mixed breeds can be fun but there are so many rare breeds that need preserving or improving that raising them is very rewarding

I have Andalusians and Buckeyes. They are not only my best layers but they tolerate all types of weather. Both breeds take maybe one day off a week no matter how hot or cold it is. I have 2 Andalusians that are 4 years old and still lay 3 to 4 times a week. I absolutely adore these birds.

are you npip? I will need some blue ameraucanas this spring

Oh no, I have a very small hobby chicken farm. I breed my babies to fund my chicken addiction.

I used to breed Andalusians but I had a hard time getting customers interested.
Tanya from http://localhens.com/farms/profile/woodlawn-farms-blue-andalusian-chickens-/
has beautiful birds. I don't know if she sells chicks but she does sell hatching eggs. I hatched some of her egg babies not too long ago and they are absolutely lovely.

we have a small hobby farm specializing in rare breeds of chickens(cubalayas, asils), but to ship, we must be npip. I can only bring in birds from other npip farms. would love some blue ameraucanas in largefowl or bantam.

Not sure where you are located, but I recall seeing a craigslist ad for Blue Ameraucanas and hatching eggs in Rocky Mount or Boones Mill over the spring/summer. They were npip.

Is anyone out there from southwest Virginia...specifically Christiansburg/Blacksburg/Radford or Montgomery/Floyd/Pulaski Counties?

I have 35 Buff Orpingtons I bought as day-old chicks from a hatchery that I am raising for meat. But, they are still very scrawny. I was thinking about cross-breeding them and was looking for someone local.

I live 30 min south of Christiansburg and 30 min north of Floyd.

I am new to the area. We moved here last year after 26 years in the Marine Corps. I am looking for a little advice on my chickens and maybe connect with locals who share similar interests. We are trying to build a small, self-reliant homestead from scratch. So far we are cutting down our pine trees and milling them into useful lumber, raising chickens, raising pigs, and hoping to get into goats, vegetable garden, and fruit trees in the next year or so. It's a lot of work, but also lots of fun, too.

Thank you.

Ted
