I had wanted some sort of Easter Egger when I went, but a lady had shown up a couple of days before and cleaned them allll out LOL. I was so disappointed, but what can you do? They are there to make a profit after all.

I wasn't to terribly picky about the breeds, I just wanted docile chickens because I have a 12 and 5 yr old, not to mention this is my first experience with chickens as well.

I really liked that she took her time with me and discussed what I was looking for and took the time with my kids to pick out their chicks as well. The service was outstanding for me and my family....can't get that from a hatchery.

I'll probably get some from a hatchery one day...I'm dying for a polish chicken!...but am very happy with the service @ Eden Farm.

I even requested 10 hens, and it looks like she gave me 10 hens - currently, I don't see a sign of a single rooster - but then again, it's my first chicken experience. LOL

I will definately recommend them to anyone...especially those with kids. The young lady was nice enough to give us a tour of farm and we were all very tickled with that.

I'm sorry you weren't very happy with them. What hatcheries do you order from? Do you show your chickens?

i still have some of the ameraucanas that i hatched from eden farms eggs. i feel that i have made some improvements as i am getting pure white ameraucanas that lay blue eggs. i ended up getting some cubalayas from sandhill preservation for $5 a chick and am very pleased with the quality of them. we got some black jersey giants from 2 different local breeders and are happy so far with them.

Wow! A pure white chicken that lays blue eggs! That sounds just lovely!

I had never heard of Cubalayas before now. I'll be looking them up.

Best of luck with your breeding program!

In a few years I'm thinking of heritage breeds, but want to familiarize myself with chickens first.

last time we went to eden farms the only breeding pens that i saw had ameraucanas ee in them. so all the other breeds they sell are hatchery chicks that they resell to the public. it has been a few years , so i dont know what they are breeding now. let me know if you need some cubalayas in the future.

Jimmy is correct and they are high on some things while other things they are fair. Nice christian people but we have some of the same birds they "have" and are have the price and can tell you where they came from and lines.

I'm in Hampton Roads - Norfolk.

I'm researching getting a few chicken in my backyard. I live in a suburb and I've actually seen an older post that says chicken can't be in Norfolk unless they're on 5 acres, but my neighbors have a coop with like 3 hens.

So, my question are, where are the other chicken lovers in SE Virginia?
Does anyone here know how many chickens you can have in Norfolk?
Does anyone know if I can have a rooster?...because I like roosters, the phoenix ones are gorgeous!

Anyway, if you live in Norfolk/SE Virginia please contact me! I'd love to here also from people in large/mid-sized cities and how many chicken they're allowed, or what chicken they have.

I don't live in Norfolk but I do live over on the Eastern shore,in Accomac. I live in a very rural area. Actually we live on a farm with 22 acres. But our family owns about 800 acres on Folly Creek. I don't know how many chickens you can have in Norfolk but if I ever move I will always have chickens. I love them so very much. I have 38 chickens. Different varities. I have Red Stars, Delawares, Barred Rock, Silver Spangled Hamburg, Aracauna or Easter Eggers, White Jersey Giants, one While Leghorn, 2 roosters Jack and JJ. I had broody WJG that hatched out 2 babies in April and the will be 1 month Wed and Friday.

I love Norfolk by the way.

Oh and my husband doesn't know it but I am gonna get some Buff Orphintons in June. They are such sweet and gentle girls.

I know there aren't too many BYC folks in my part of the state, but I just saw a craigslist ad for a small animal/chicken sale in Riner (near Floyd) on May 22. It sounds like they're trying to make it a regular thing. Not sure if I can make it, but I though I'd pass it along. Here is the link to the CL ad: http://blacksburg.craigslist.org/grd/1736191150.html (may have to copy and paste)
