cubalaya, those are some nice looking Delawares you have. Where did they originate?

i have some from beth holmes(joletabey), a whitmore hen, and a paul harter hen. they are laying some large eggs. i had some help from steve at nina's farm in ruther glen va. with getting started with the delawares. my plan is to hatch as many as possible and cull down to the best 6 hens this year.

Well I tarped mine one winter when we got a heavy snow, that was ok but then we got 2 inches of rain on top of that and the tarp filled with water and collapsed my run. So to me it's more trouble than its worth.

That's what I wondered about. Thanks for the info.

I tarped a portion of the run and today with all the rain it started to pool water. I'm worried now it might collapse too. Ugh! Hoping it holds until I can figure out a better way.

It's my understanding it is in medicated chick starter but not in the others that we buy. There was a case last year were two kids had high levels of arsenic in there blood and they traced it back to the famliy birds. They were still giving their layers med. chick starter so the arsenic was being passed in the eggs.
Other than chick starter ,our feed should be safe. Med chick starter is a good thing for started chicks just don't compost their litter for your garden.

Hi from Pittsylvania Co! in regards to the poop and fertilizer..what is the time frame for puttin it down then tillin and plantin? im familiar with cow manure(got plenty of that) but i have heard that chicken poo has alot more nitrogen among other things undesireable to be soaked into your food.

we compost our chicken manure and rabbit manure for 6 months before putting on the garden. i have been using medicated chick starter for years on the just hatched chicks and put that manure or litter with the other to compost. could this cause arsenic in my soil? chicks dont get cocci if kept above ground on wire?
