I'm in King George and thinking about selling a few dozen eggs to help pay for feed. How do I get started doing that? Do I have to get a business license or is it okay just to advertise in Craigslist? Is there a local coop to go through?

unless you're selling to a grocery or restaurant, no license is needed. you can advertise on craigslist or even just a sign by the mailbox as a lot of people in this area do.

but make sure of your local ordinances. some localities allow you to keep hens but not sell the eggs.

just a reminder, the roanoke poultry swap will be a week from tomorrow. the 21st of July...
If we were still in Blacksburg, I would definately be there, but it is too far away now and I can't go back for enough days...my grandchildren are all coming to stay a couple of weeks.

Any one in Va raise any of the following?
Muscovy Ducks, Narragansett Turkeys, Standard Barred Plymouth Rocks, Standard New Hampshire's (not from German or Hatchery Lines), American Buff or Pomeranian Geese

These are some of the birds I am looking to add to my farm I already have some Muscovy's, Narr Turkeys, and New Hamps so am just looking for new bloodlines in those
I want the BR's for a project and the geese are just two breeds I would love to own/breed

If anyone has some please let me know I would also be willing to do a trade if I raise something you are interested in or are also looking for new bloodlines

I thought I had a trio of BR but I added pics to breed & sexing ?? forum and the 1st reply says they are all roos! Needless to say, I am just beginning! Have some other breeds I am letting go too as I have decided to keep a few breeds which don't imclude those.

SO Bummed.
Back in March - after much careful consideration - I picked up a few chicks with the only real criteria being the range of egg colors.
I lost one of my EE's and one of the Marans early on. Struggled with my remaining Marans but she finally got going and started to grow and thrive. Last week I noticed that my she is growing a few copper feathers on her back.

Surely, since I wasn't concerned enough (or knowledgeable enough) to worry about 'correctness' of breed, these were just 'off' feathers.... I posted some picts on one of the Marans threads.. and she is definitely a he.

Of all the ones that could have turned out to be a male, it just had to be the one that will mess up every else's egg colors - if I ever decide to hatch out any eggs. My flock is too small to have more than one roo.. So that polish that I had sort of dreamed of is fading fast.....

I guess my choices are:
1 - get rid of him
2 - keep him but don't hatch any eggs - at least not with the intention of raising up more pinkish, light brown or green egg layers.
3 - build another coop JUST for dark brown egg layers
a - get a second job to pay for the building materials and everything else that goes along with it......

aw... sorry to hear that.

just consider tho. no matter what flavor roo you end up with, someone's egg color is going to change in the offspring.

i think, from what i've seen, olive eggers are in demand much more than brown blue or white egg layers, so a marans/ee cross would be desirable. personally, i'm putting a dorking roo over my easter eggers, to intensify the blue, not to change it. an added side effect is you can tell all my ee babies because they have 5 toes. LOL but they sure are cute.
