So, with one plausible vector in your opinion, workers, why the heck are they slaughtering backyard flocks? Is this like the TSA, security theater?

They’re killing birds so they [assumedly the commercial operations] don’t get the disease.
Sooner or later you won’t be able to keep chickens in a backyard setting like that for fear of disease.
They aren’t killing birds fast enough in any area to make an impact. That would have needed toYes. This has been the STATED policy of CDFA for some substantial time. They're clear about this. They are compensating anyone whose chickens are taken but they are resolved to proceed in this manner in the larger interest of chicken owners -- of whatever type -- in the rest of non-quarantined CA. That much will not be likely be changing until this thing is over.
That much is not clear from anything that's transpired. It may be the sort of hysteria that folks like Kerri Elaine are trying to whip up. But there was a similar quarantine in 2002 that raged, got quelled and was over that did NOT result in anyone's ability to have chickens get limited or removed.
Not dealing with this as mature adults contributing to the effort to stop contageon is, in my opinion, a more likely reason to eliminate the nuisance of backyard hobbyists.
I'm one of those dreaded soft-hearted owners of pet chickens. I'm also of the belief that all sentient creatures deserve the right to live. I also live in California (albeit the Northern half of the state). I have tremendous compassion for the chickens, backyard or commercial, and their owners. And I see your point. You might try to see ours. I love my birds, and the main reason I have them is because I am not a fan of animal treatment in many commercial operations. Now I know where my eggs come from, and my chickens have the best possible life I can give them in my semi-rural yard.
I'm also a Libertarian who is currently registered Republican (for access to the vote during Primaries). So there you go. Compassion and conservatism can coexist!

mine aren't! why do they have to be killed at some point? You're not safe in hot areas whether you free range them or raise them in a hermetically-sealed environment. They're all going to be killed. You have absolutely no control over that.
I agree. Some people like how roosters look, like their personalities, or would rather keep a bachelor flock than kill their extra roos. I know someone online who keeps just a flock of silkie roosters.
From what I'm hearing, there needs to be more regulation and better training on how to humanely kill birds in mandatory cull areas.
I am a soft hearted animal person too. I totally believe in humanely killing for food, actually, I eat chicken often, just not my own. I am also very upset when animals are treated like dead meat before they are butchered! every animal deserves a good life before they die! I am absolutely against cornishx and breeds like that because we literally bred the life out of these poor, sweet birds. and not only that, but it is hurting human health as well! my chickens have a great quaility of life! plus they wouldn't have any life if I free ranged them here! so I would say that secure runs are amazing as long as they are big enough!Even free range not just an outside run where the wild birds would actually be drawn to. I understand your point but keeping birds totally locked up and not allowed to run around is a much more recent idea for keeping chickens safe regardless of quality of life. To each their own.
What?! Euthanize us, too?! Now that's extreme! Not dealing with this as mature adults contributing to the effort to stop contageon is, in my opinion, a more likely reason to eliminate the nuisance of backyard hobbyists.

JK. I'm being silly. Kinda offended, but I know my opinion isn't valued here.
Wait... Isn't the name of this site "BackYard Chickens?" Huh.
Not so. I value your opinion - and everyone else's who posts here. It's sort of a given - to me - when I join a "group". You respect the other members. You may disagree with their feelings, but you don't spit on them or demean their opinions. And you are entitled to the same from the other members. No one of us is "king" and we all bring different life-experiences and different ways of feeling and thinking. What?! Euthanize us, too?! Now that's extreme!
