We were given an 8 week old pullet who seems to have wry neck. Her neck is twisted a bit and she can't stand up. Her legs are much stronger....running in the air stronger, but she pushes herself over and doesn't quite sit right on her hocks. Actually she doesn't seem to sit like a normal bird, she will lay on her side and get her head and neck twisted if we leave her in a box, so we have her in a sling and are giving her poultry vitamins. She is a hungry girl and her poops are normal. Just unable to stand or even sit like a bird usually does. Do her legs not let her sit right? Or is it lack of control. My son is building her a walker. How much vitamin E is the right amount to cure wry neck? It has been more 3 weeks but I have read that it can take time. She is a very sweet soft Barred Rock
She was a normal chick but perhaps got stressed as they took away the heat lamp at 5 weeks and just had a light bulb. February was rather cold in Oregon this year and the chicks were moved to an outdoor coop that was open on half of one side with two light bulbs to keep the chicks warm.

Most people give 400 IU of vitamin E, plus some thiamine (vitamin B1) that is in most chick vitamins. You can also crush or grate 1/4 tablet of human vitamin B Complex daily and add that both the vitamin E to food. Feeding a small amount of egg will add selenium.

Do you have any pictures of how she normally sits? Are her toes curled under on either leg? I would try holding her up to a standing position to help strengthen her legs. A chicken sling with both feet touching the ground might be helpful. Here are some examples:

She can lay her feet flat, but can't get to an upright position unless propped in place. Thanks, I will check the amount of Vit E in the vitamins which I bought at the feed store

Has this chick always had a problem with standing and wry neck, or is that a recent issue? I don’t want to scare you, but if it is a recent problem, that can sometimes be a sign of Mareks disease. Mareks usually doesn’t show signs until a chicken is a few months old. Wry neck and leg issues are much more common than Mareks, so keep that in mind. Here are a couple of articles about Mareks to read:
