Vote Yes on Proposition 2

I wonder how this will affect chicks & brooder houses.
I also don't understand the arguement about retrofitting costs... from my simple side, if you have caged animals now, and you let them roam, especially chickens... you don't HAVE any additional costs... just a lot of cages to sell, and maybe a couple of guardian animals to aquire (goats, donkeys, sheep or even a trained pooch)

I just don't understand why the price of eggs would go up... suddenly you need less equipment, less food & less clean up work and the price goes UP?

I've seen several large scale egg production farms that were freeranging.. big barns for shelter, big pastures to roam.. I've even seen mobile home sized tractors being moved around fields.. it just doesn't seem that hard to me.

My mom keeps everything in a cage... now.. there is a time & place for everything, but I think the key is not ALL the time and not EVERY place.

I just read Terrielacy post warning us to 'keep it civil' on the previous page, and decided to edit

So, to summarize- I disagree with the initial poster.

I don't understand your message. Are you saying that my oposition to the Proposition is awful for "us farmers"? I don't understand how this would be awful since it will keep the organization, PETA, ALF, and Farm Sanctuary OUT of farming in California.

Jim

The problem is that not everyone who votes on it will have a full understanding of the implications. They see the pictures and videos and think "awwwww...poor birdies they need more room we should pass this law."

I can't imagine that all of the voters in CA have a thorough understanding of animal agriculture, certainly not enough to know what is best for the animals.

I'm not trying to say anything bad about Californians. It would be like if someone asked me to vote on how to run a commercial fishing operation. I know nothing about the business and would likely vote based on feelings or what someone told me was the best way. I can't make an informed decision about something I have not experienced and know little about.

What I am saying is instead of mandates and talking the talk, try walking the walk and voting wih your pocket book.

The increased costs will be from having more Labor, more buidings since a battery house that houses 60,000 hens will probably only hold 10,000 or fewer under this law, and you will have less efficient production.

Thanks Jim, that does make sense now in terms of retro fit.

I wonder if selling the cages would help their bottom line, I mean... my hen house plus aviary almost 200sf cost about as much as 15 medium sized dog crates... perhaps they'll be able to re-coop (lol) some costs on eBay!

Overseas they use netting which is very affordable so they are totally enclosed.

used chicken cages, especially ones deemed not meeting the legal size, are worth scrap metal prices. no "re-cooping" will happen on the cages. They will have to basically re-do thier whole operations from the ground up.
