"Wad of Bubble Gum Comb" in silkies

I agree; they are supposed to have a walnut comb. I personally do not care how large the comb is if it is properly shaped; however a number of breeders seem to want the comb to be as small as possible. In my opinion, that is why some lines lack virility. Combs are very definitly related to the male sex drive and fertility.

There are a lot of funky combs on some silkies, so I certainly cannot say that the OP's is correct (or I should say her BIRD'S comb, lol) as the photo is too small and dark to really see the details of the comb.

These are perfectly shaped walnut combs from http://www.geocities.com/Petsburgh/6624/index.html :

The reference also shows some of the modified rose combs that some silkies have. In my opinion, the really ugly, gnarly shaped combs tend to be modified rose combs rather than true walnuts.

So if comb size is directly proportional to virility, all the hens within miles of onthespot and I should have fertile eggs, haha!

Your link isnt working. I'd love to see more example of true walnut combs.

What if you have the walnut shape with two spike off the top? What do the spikes indicate?

This picture (see the spikes? and I know his comb is too red, but he's my showmanship bird)

lol, hear i am thinking a wag of bubble comb in his comb and hair. i am like, geesssh just get some peanut butter or ice. SIGH Then i read the thread and i am on the floor laughing because of my stupidity! hahahaha

The spikes indicate the trifid affect. The are carrying the same gene as for polish combs (D^V). Once upon a time, long long ago (before I had chickens) apparently they were required by the standard. Personally I do not like them, but they can be hard to get rid of.
