Does every flock have a wailing hour? I've got four hens and every afternoon one (not always the same, but never more than one) will just...wail. Not an egg call, not distress or their classy rooster imitation, not a "how dare you that's my nest box" caterwaul. It's just a plain, long calling for a half hour or so, and then--done! Off they pop to snacks and a bev. These girls have a pasture, get mash in the morning and pellet at-will, so I can't imagine this is a food thing. Anyone have thoughts? Are they looking for a rooster, or just shouting into the void?

...And I mean, if it's the void I can respect that. I guess I'm wondering if I'm failing their need to have an alter to the elder gods.

We've raised silkies for the past eight years and don't hear much of the egg songs or whatever song, although it is once in a while.

The past few days though, hubby and I have turned our heads to look at the coop as someone's sure got some weird "song" if you will. I don't know if we'd call it wailing but it's very strange, enough to draw our attention to it. Today, I might just go in the coop when it happens and find out who's doing that!
