Walk and open mouth behavior?

just curious what it means or why they do it.... but why do they just walk along and randomly open their mouth in sort of a gaging motion and then just keep walking along like nothing?

Oh, quail do that when they're stressed too. I have a couple hens that do it just from me walking in the room. It can be a sign of illness but it's often not.

I've heard that it's them readjusting the contents of their crop—see if they do it more just before or after they eat.

Just was sitting and watching them.. and noticed a few that would just be cruising around the enclosure and randomly make that “burb” type action... and yea.. it really does look like a burp... one in particular does it as they leave the food bowl... just found it interesting and was wondering what it means or the cause... thanks for the input

I used to do fermented feed which multiplies this burping action. It means they need to burp... the cause is air or gas that has been swallowed and need to be released.

In humans... any gas created in the stomach (byproduct of things breaking down or air swallowed during consumption) will come out as a burp. If it forms in the intestines then it gets passed as a fart... which we probably never notice in a chicken.
