Walnut Creek CA

Hello,

We sold our property in Ohio. Tractor, chickens, coop. Gone.
We relocated for my husband’s job and I am really wanting chickens again.
Anyone know the laws for Walnut Creek in California? We are in a rural pocket with an acre and a creek behind us. I have been reading but looking for others who can help me navigate and live in the area.
Let me add - our neighbors have 2 goats and are about to get 6 hens. I have not talked with them yet about laws or anything. They know we want to get some also.

Thank you chicken friends ❤

I don’t know about your area, but if your neighbor can have goats, I‘m sure you can have chickens. The question might be whether you need a permit, but probably not. The city I‘m in (in SoCal) has unreasonable regulations for getting a permit for backyard chickens so most people who have chickens don’t get a permit. In a neighboring city where I work, you don’t need a permit and can have up to 50 chickens (properties are bigger for horses, etc.)
Good luck!

Don't assume anything - for example I can legally have thousands of chickens, but some of my neighbors can only have 3. You need to figure out who has jurisdiction over your lot (HOA, city, county?) and then look up the zoning for it. Zoning ordinance should also have information on any building restrictions you might have (size, setbacks, etc). If you're not sure feel free to link any websites with applicable information and we can take a look at it.
