The sweet smelling hay and fragrant wood chips in my runs turned into a stinky, slimy mess. The chickens were getting these weird, round manure/mud balls stuck to their to their toes. White Silkies in that muck is not a pretty sight.
I decided to shovel out the nasty mess and fill the runs with sand. It was 10 dollars for a cubic yard. That doesn't sound like much, but a yard of damp sand weighs about 3000 pounds. I had to split it between my 2 trucks:
It was enough sand to fill 2 6'x8' runs about 5 inches deep. That sure beats buying 4 dollar bags of play sand.
