Wanna see $10 worth of sand?

The sweet smelling hay and fragrant wood chips in my runs turned into a stinky, slimy mess. The chickens were getting these weird, round manure/mud balls stuck to their to their toes. White Silkies in that muck is not a pretty sight.

I decided to shovel out the nasty mess and fill the runs with sand. It was 10 dollars for a cubic yard. That doesn't sound like much, but a yard of damp sand weighs about 3000 pounds. I had to split it between my 2 trucks:

It was enough sand to fill 2 6'x8' runs about 5 inches deep. That sure beats buying 4 dollar bags of play sand.

You got all of that for 10 dollars? Sounds like a good deal to me. Glad the chickens are happy.

Wow! That's dirt cheap. I live in biggest sand bar in the country & pay moor than that. Good deal.

You'll be very thankful you did that. I added sand to my runs when I built them, and add a bit more each year. It really does help with drainage and contributing to minimal maintenance. You made a wise decision.

thats a lot of sand for 10.00 and good to know,
I have to be doing the same thing . and did not
know how much to fill my 5x12 run, it is 5in.deep.

We go scoop sand off the ridge in our pasture.... I even use it in vases when decorating our house its such nice stuff...I am going to have DH add some sand to the run, looks like a great idea!
