Want to do a chicken tractor, but afraid of safety.

Why not build the tractor, feeding them in it so when you open the door, they know they will eat and get treats when they get to that tractor, allow them out all day, dusk let them go back to the coop. solves both problems!
 
I do not have very much property and my yard very closely borders two neighbors. Then the very busy road with lots of fast traffic...I would LOVE to free range, but am afraid I'd end up losing more birds than I keep.

It is definitely something I have/am considering...maybe if I fence in the yard and clip wings.

You know what is weird, DH puts that cheap walmart fencing that is plastic, 3 foot tall around the back yard, we let the birds "free range". They do not offer to go over it, or under it for that matter.
Only the front side of their area is hieghtened as they see me, and fly to greet me.
The only problem with free range, in open, is that those beautiful raptors can get them. Good luck to you!!!
