I have put my chicks out in a large guinea pig cage, or also a wire dog crate to get some sunshine. They are a bit stronger than chicken wire, and not too expensive as long as your chicks are big enough to not squeeze out. I never felt secure enough to be too far away, but your location may be safer than mine.
