Want to order the Chicken Waterer and need your feedback on cold weather

Pati,
You sound just like me!! I worry about all my critters as much as my kids. Cold morning? Chickens need warm oatmeal, right? And to adding goats...YES!! Not that you won't worry about these precious things too. Quite the contrary! I added chicks and two 5 week old nubian does 2 summers ago. I LOVE my goaties!! This spring was their first freshening and now I have four bottle babies to enjoy (and worry about) too. They are running around in the same pen with my hens and all is great!!

I used a Rubbermaid tote and nipple system all last summer. As it was getting cold I placed the cable heater around my PVC pipe with the same hopes that you have and in one night all the nipples were frozen and day 2 the PVC busted from the ice. There is a CHANCE the $30.00 cable had a manufacture defect, but my suggestion is to plan to find another way to help keep your water thawed. Any ideas are greatly appreciated; I don't want to spend another winter replacing water twice a day every day! I really prefer keeping the water OUT of the coop, things stay much dryer, and Chickens seem to be happier.

Jonathan
