WANTED: hatching partner

I have 3 chicks!!!!!

I've been gone almost all day and arrived home to 3 chicks! My DH called me at 9am and said three had cracks and he could hear chirping. I checked on them about 1pm and 7 had cracks. I got home at 5:30pm and 3 were out!!!

3 hatched, 6 more have pipped, and nothing yet on 3 others - out of 12 total. It's going to be a long night of waiting!

Hope everyone else is seeing progress too! This is so exciting!!!

LALADY - I don't know if breed matters when hatching? Do different breeds hatch faster than others? I have welsummers, and two of the three that hatched already had very little pips when I left today at 1pm, but they hatched faster than some of the ones with larger cracks - all of this activity in a little over 8 hours. I think it may just be the determination of the individual chick!

lucky you, i wish it happened when i wasnt home, i am sitting here waiting and trying so hard not to go check! my incubator door isnt see threw

My stress actually became worse when I could see the pips and hear them chirping with none hatched yet, but now that I've got 4 out, it's still exciting, but I'm more relaxed because even if this is all that makes it, I'll still be happy!

WOW-small world. Don't know how long it's been since you've been around this area, but we've seriously grown-once they started bringing in the casinos LC started booming overnight.

SOOOOOOO, I am officially a chicken momma!!!!

I have 5 baby silkies hatched. I had not idea they would be soooo tiny-they are adorable!!!! There's still one egg that's a little iffy on it's pip and two that are doing nothing. I really want to move the babies to the brooder, but everything I've seen on here says to wait due to the possibility of that one questionable pip. I've seen people say that they candle questionable eggs during incubation-how do you do that if you can't open the bator? What do I put the babies' food in?-they're so tiny that I don't think they can reach the feeder. Should I just put it in a dish or something like that for now?

I know everyone has different procedures but for me what has worked for new chickies is to put paper towels over their litter, which is pine shavings, and put their feed directly on the paper towels. Then when they are a little older I put their food in a dish or something. Or a feeder. But then they know to look for it.

congrats on the babies. mine are also silkies and you are right they are small. last questionable pip i had did not hatch. my husband fussed because i did not let him assist and the chick died in the shell. so that is always a hard one. i use a chick feeder and they can get to the food. the first day or two i use paper towels only. had not thought about putting it over the shaving but that makes sense as it would absorb more.
