Wanted: Indestructible vacuum cleaner

We have a dyson and a dirt devil. The dirt devil has gone through everything. We have a chewed up cord from a bunch of puppies that ihave fixed. its gone through. dirt, spiderwebs, candy wrappers, shredded newspaper. the works.

I've heard Dysons are great, but I haven't been able to bring myself to cough up the cash.

I am at war with the vaccuum cleaners I've had. Hated them. Have wanted to murder them. Sometimes tried to murder them. Is that legal?
Have had uprights I suppose because of price. I only use the hose for my hardwood floors and area/throw rugs and the uprights fall over constantly while I'm working, usually with a vengeance on a toe. They clog. Cord is always mercilessly tangled. The vaccuum runs over the cord and frays/severs it.
I really really need to vaccuum - in 2 days the house looks frightening if I don't. And it takes an hour to do it because so much stuff is dragged indoors from outside. If I don't vaccuum, plants will start growing.
I am eagerly reading this thread for vaccuum recommendations! I almost don't care if I have to mortgage the house to get one that isn't infuriating!
My current upright Bissel isn't upright - the thing that's supposed to keep it up isn't and so I drag the whole thing around like a dead body - maybe I did kill it after all?

Wow, nice to know I'm not alone in my vac problems. I'm with you jj, they are the most cumbersome cleaning devices to work with. And yes between, 4 kids, 3 dogs, 2 cats, DH, and my 3 brooders with all their dust, I'm needing to vac every day. I didn't know Sharp made a vac, might have to look into that. They make good microwaves.
Does the Dyson have a bunch of filters? My "broke" Bissell has 3 and they clog at the drop of a hat.

Lurky, what model of Dyson do you have? Would the one that's under $400

be a good one or do you have to spend the $600 to get a good one.
I told DH let's just go to the used vac store and by those. I wouldn't feel as guilty breaking an old used one.

Dyson, Dyson, Dyson.
Did I say Dyson?
I vacuum up giant piles of wood shavings, kitty litter, small toys, piles and piles of cat hair.. i've had it for 3 years now and not so much as a broken belt.
Yes, it's hard to pay that much for a vac, but you'll spend that much on cheap ones in the same amount of time.

I think they are all good. If you go on the DYSON site, they have charts to compare the models. I have the RED one. The pet model is purple. They differ in what comes with them for attachments. Then they differ because the models better than mine have a BALL that allow turning better and i think it is way better. I would have loved the one with EVERYTHING....but i got the red one and i think it was $450. I think that is the middle if them all. The chart is a great help to decide what to get. I'll tell you, i went through all the same thing and i think it was a vacuum a year. I even got a $500 oreck once thinking it was the best. It is good on carpet, but you need a hose and attachments. The DYSON is so great. If you can only afford the bottom model of DYSON, it would still be better than ANY other vacuum. But compare what you get with each step up. Some have more attachments......the pet model seemed to have an attachment for furniture and i knew i would never use it......that is why i went with the red one and saved a little. So i too have a zoo of animals and i NEVER put mine away.......i use it almost daily and my husband says for 3 or 4 yrs......(Time sure flies) and i have never had a problem and the suction is like the day i bought it. I just remembered the cheapest one is different also in the wand/hose area. I think you will see that in the comparison chart on the site and that is why i chose the red one too.

I had a really cheap vac once. It made a noise like a plane taking off and spewed out fine dust from its rear. One day it went flash bang and made me really happy. I got a really quiet one with a good filter now, but unfortunately they have stopped making them. I would always go for a quiet anti-alergy one.
