I am 17 and I want a nice older cruiser to tide as a first bike. I want your advice on what kind of bike I should look for, however if you know of any for sale, just let me know.

Thanks, Tyler

Stay away from crotch rockets. PLEASE! Harleys are nice heavy bikes that offer great stability and balance. It's not really about going fast its really about stopping safely and a bigger bike will offer that over a smaller lighter bike. (believe me I know, I dropped my honda shadow daily until I traded for a HD lowrider)

My motto has always been don't buy a bike bigger than you can lift off ourself when you dump it.

Thank ya"ll both for the replies. I just dont want to get too expensive of a bike the first time you know? I also don't want more bike than I can handle.

I have a 2002 suzuki intruder 800cc cruser looks and sounds like a sportster has 2 gas tanks, the original and a custom tank(looks like a fat bob tank) excellent mechanical condition, foreward controls, drag handle bars, vance and hines shotgun exhaust, red accent lights, new tires harley davidson leather saddle bags, and over 1500.00 in chrome, it's a head turner and has 14,000 miles. Selling for $3200.00 very firm. I have two bikes and only need one. Email me for pictures. my images are bmj and cant upload to this site.

You aren't going to like this but at least think about it. 17 is too young for a street bike. Riding a motorcycle is extremely dangerous and takes a LOT of experience to reduce that risk. I've lost a few friends on bikes and have seen a lot of young kids die or turn into road pizza.

I've saved my own life a few times already this year, not from having bike experience, but from having car experience. I can better predict and defend against the idiots in the cars, a bikers biggest threat.

Go to school, get a job, have a family. Then, later in life get yourself a nice Harley or cruiser. Please, just think about it. You're future children deserve to be born and have a dad.

P.S. I've rode my bike over 4000 miles so far this season. I rode a lot when I was younger and am lucky to be alive.

My first bike was an older Honda Rebel.... they made them in 250 and 450 and the years you will see are 1985-87. Althought the 450 was only made in 86-87. They are easy to work on and the parts are interchangeable with many of the honda models. They can be found for between $500-1000. They take a lot of abuse and just keep on going.

Other good first cruisers are Suzuki Intruders, Kawasaki Vulcans, honda shadow, yamaha virago.

Many older cruisers out there, I found the rebel to just be very comfortable for me, had a vulcan too but the gas tank was kind of wide and felt bigger.

Take a safety course to learn how to ride. IN Ca for they are mandatory for young riders... they teach you how to ride and the safest way to stop fast, etc... it was invaluable to me as all my harley friends wanted to show me their bad habits when showing me how to ride.

Also PLEASE get the proper safety gear - jacket, pants or chaps, gloves, boots. No riding in flip flops :rolleyes:There is so much "cool" gear these days.. there's no excuse.

Good luck!

I agree proper protective equipment is a must!!!!!!!!!!! Defensive Driving is of the utmost importance, and always make sure your bike is in proper mechanical condition, it only takes a split second to be hurt!!!!!

For a first bike go with what you can afford witch will probably be an older Honda & there is nothing wrong with that. I ride a Victory 8-Ball & everyone know Harley's are nice bikes. But I would say stick with something small & light for a while till you learn what you are doing. Remember riding is about having fun. So get one have some fun & keep the shiny side up.
