What you are describing is very typical. They have lived their lives in a cage doing their "job". They were fed, watered, vaccinated, etc. but that was the extent. They have been pulled out of crates but not picked up from the ground so you are big and scary to them right now. The Boston that I have dances around my hands still when I am in a standing position but as soon as I crouch, she is all over me. They have never had stairs, nor grass. The circles often resemble them walking around the perimeter of their crate, their only form of entertainment and exercise. They will learn to bark...trust me.
