Good fruit cake should not be hard.

Yup! or should I say NOPE? Hard fruitcake has either been overbaked, stored too long or commercially made (kept hard to keep it from spoiling and/or crumbling. Making fruit cake is an art ... and too many people laugh so hard at the joke that they miss out on trying the good stuff!

No, the bars need to be horizontal* (edit) and the hardware cloth is a bad idea. The size is good.

Why Is hardware cloth bad? Isn't it what breeders use to make all those divided breeding cages
