WANTED: Your chicken calls!!!

My Australorps have become accustomed to morning to the sound of the screen door on our back deck opening and closing and come running most of the time. For the ones that didn't pay attention to that I call out "dinner time girls." That gets their attention and they come running too. While some people think chickens aren't so smart, I have found them to be rather intelligent and all seem to have the ability to be trained.

Hmmm...so many great ideas.... I like "Here, chick, chick, chick!" (And your version, warmfuzzies

), but I wonder if our cats will come running when I call the chickens, or the chickens when I call the cats, since I call the barncats with "Heeeeeere, kitty, kitty, kitty, kitty!"

Maybe "Dinner time girls!" would be more distinguishable.

Anyone else???

I have to quietly close it behind me if I don't want to get their attn. and if they hear the smallest sound of me coming down to the gate or opening it, they are out of the coop or up the hill in a flash. It is very difficult to sneak in to give the peeps or a special snack to one or a few without the whole flock showing up. If I want to call them over to the fence line for a dandelion snack, if they're not pacing the fence line already, I just say "Hey Girls! Snaaack!" or Chickieees! and they come running.
If you stick fairly close to snack or feeding time being the same time each day that helps alot. They will anticipate you coming and be there.

Everyone comes running... very comical sight. Then my husband makes fun of me

Just opening the screen door gets my flock's attention. If I call them (either Hi Guys or Chick Chicks) they will come running. The come to both my husband and I. Even if we dont have food or treats they will follow us around the yard as we do stuff. Ive not really had other people over to find out if they will come to anyone who calls them. I should experiment.

It doesn't really matter what you say or do. It's being consistent and repetitious so that the birds associate the sound or whatever with the treat. The birds will do almost anything for treats. After awhile when they are used to your certain call they will come to you and follow you in anticipation of a treat.
