I have been hoping one of my 5 hens (3 domineckers 2 Sussex) would go broody this summer. Wondering what to look for to know that one may be wanting to go broody. Or what could be done to coax one into being broody.

I have left eggs in the nest box to build a clutch but to no avail. Also, in the last week the hens have started using a different nest box than the two they had been using up to this point.

This is the first summer for all of these hens.

You can't make them go broody. Many breeds have had the tendency bred out of them, so picking breeds prone to going broody can help.

A broody hen will sit in the nestboxes or on a nest and will puff up and quite often screech and attack anyone who comes near her. She will only leave the nest once a day and will quickly return to her nest when removed.
