Wanting to Change to Sand

So last year we built our chicken run and put wood chips in it. I am not really thinking I am a fan of the wood chips, well it's better than what we had, but now I want sand. My question is, do I have to dig out all of the wood chips or can I put the sand on top, or do I need to get out as much as I can; and then add the sand in. Also what type of sand am I looking for?

First, what is your location, city, state, country? Your local climate has a huge impact on what sort of substrate is most practical.

Second, is your run covered? A wet climate can make a run with sand substrate a nightmare. Wood chips in a deep litter substrate might be more suitable.

No, sand over wood chips wouldn't work. It's much easier to rake and shovel out wood chips than to discover sand over the wood chips is not going to work.

The best type of sand to use is the cheap construction sand. It comes in very coarse and normal. You do not want the very coarse.
