Runners are awesome birds! Yes they can be a bit shy at times, but what duck isn't? Sounds like you have a good setup for your yard...
Their pool can a foot or two deep, or deeper. Lots of people think runners can't swim but they can. I would get 3 ducks, if you have two and one dies then you'll be left with a very lonely duck. Runners are great layers!

Runners are great. I had 3, now 2. They are friendly, but not going to climb up in my lap.
If you only have a few and spend time with them each day as they grow, they should be pretty friendly.

water - deep enough to dunk their heads, deeper than that is better so they can swim and play. A kiddie pool is fine. Any size. The bigger, the more enjoyment for you when watching them and more water to change when it needs it.
Mine free range during the day and are closed up in a dog house at night. Nobody has complained about their living situation yet

thanks everyone for all the replies.im still going back and forth about getting ducks.it seems like they are gonna be alot harder to take care of then my chickens.i want to make sure i have the time and energy to take care of them the way they deserve.but they sure are adorable and its very,very tempting.
