Hey yall, so my 13 yr old brother and I are wanting to start a chicken farm where we breed chickens, sell hatching eggs, and sell eating eggs, and we were wondering what the best way to do it is? So, if any of you have any ideas, or experience, pros/cons, please do tell!

The most crucial is customer contact (word of mouth, marketing and advertising) otherwise you will be loaded with eggs and end up giving them away before it gets bad. Scout your market, if there are lots of people having backyard chickens and giving away or selling eggs at low price in your area it might not be feasible.
Start small, so your loses will be small too and while your adjusting/learning this kind of business you’ll get the kinks out with minimal loses, remember experience matters unless your super lucky. Sit down and consider the cost, money, time and your willingness to do the chores without thinking it’s a chore.

Location, location, location. Your location for your flock for their health and safety (diseases, overcrowding, weather and temperatures and also predators). Location for your target market (customers) I.e. free range chicken eggs, cage free and or hormone and chemical/drug free flock or eggs and market price.

For eating eggs charge your relatives and friends and yourself for consuming them. Find breeds that are prolific egg layers. On hatching eggs find breeds that are going to be in demand or are rare enough for consumers to want them.

I started with 10 layers and grew them to a certain amount after accidentally finding right customers without planning on selling them (supply and demand) I sell hatching eggs for $5-15 each and only on certain time of the year. I sell eating eggs all year round but consider the slow down laying time of each layers.

I'm glad to see you started your own thread on the topic you wanted answers to!
Do you have Nextdoor.com in your area? I live near some affluent neighborhoods and by posting pictures of my flock and their eggs, I was able to sell them for $4/dozen as they are organic, pasture raised, omega enhanced. I can't keep up with demand. There is a large farm right around the corner from me that sells for $2.25/dozen.
For selling hatching eggs, you may want to join local or regional FB poultry groups for advertising and learning what breeds are in highest demand in your area. If you really get into things is a major way, you may want to get NPIP certified.

First...build a coop, a big one!

Where in this world are you located?
Climate, and time of year, is almost always a factor.
Please add your general geographical location to your profile.
It's easy to do, (laptop version shown), then it's always there!
