I forgot about that. I'm not a trapper (hopefully someday though) but I think that is the rule here, too. I believe it's because they will just chew their leg off, which is less humane than drowning. Beaver traps are underwater too.
i would highly recommend trapping, its a great hobby. just don't let the Anti trappers get you down.

but i hate to see animal hurt so now we use padded and off set jaw traps to prevent blood loss to the foot that would cause chewing. (it's illegal to use a trap not deemed humane)

I have a couple close friends that trap. In fact, I used to get the beaver carcasses from them for my dogs. Beaver was my old GSD's favorite food. I usually use my vacation for deer season, so I don't have a lot of time for trapping, but in a couple years that will change. Or I could skip beaver all together and just go for fox and pine marten.

Fur prices are down, but with the number of fox and pine marten hanging out around here, I could fill my tags and never leave my property and the time commitment would be minimal. I would do it just to protect my current and future farm animals.

My dad used to trap. I went with him as a little kid, but didn't pay much attention. In fact, my first trapping trip was when I was 3 months old. He just bundled me up in the sled with his gear. My mom appreciated the break after being cooped up with me all day.
