warning: about a dead duckling

You did everything you could.
The duckling is a wood duck, not a mallard. Wood ducklings are extremely difficult and tricky to raise. My guess would be that it was a late hatcher and was left behind.

Thats very nice of you. But you might want to read a article on here first about how to bury the ducking. I tried to look for one but could not find one. I'm sure somebody else can?

I use a shovel or my post hole auger to dig a hole...

This is important because predators WILL dig them up! And then it's another awful sad moment! Don't ask me how I know!
