As a young person we had a rooster get tangled and hand upside down until dead in regular old chicken wire in the vertical sides of a run.

We lost two young birds last year to electronet when (we believe, did not see it) a hawk frightened them into the fence and they became entangled. But it works so very well most of the time that we are willing to accept the occassional loss to have the benefits. The birds are "trained" to the fence and do not even try to fly out as adults, although they very easily could. The elctronet allows us to move them to fresh pasture on a regular basis. Really cuts down the feed and bedding bills.

Sorry for your loss. We try so hard to protect our flocks, it hurts when the fence becomes the predator.

The problem is the weed burner and the size of the bird you used a cow fencer sounds like the snimal got tangled and couldnt escape I also kick my wire out and leave 4 inches for the critter to get in Ive never lost one to a fence before but if I did Id rather lose one to a fence and fix the design than the whole flock to one 2 hr predater attack...

Thanks every one! It is an always on- Old Type charger. It is on a very small run right now but It will soon be around a huge run I am building. It was used to keep Hogs in before. It is a VERY powerful unit. I even hooked up both the ground wire and the Hot wire to boot! The entire fence is grounded to the unit and the Hot Is VERY Powerful!!! I checked it with a digital meter. Mine says it putting out a lil over 19 volts! Not sure what joules. mine wont measure joules. But Yes it is a Weed Burner!!! I just never imagined it causing them to stick to it. I just figured they would jump away like we do. But it cought her right on the meaty part of her chin. I feel so horrible! I guess it just will remind me/us that we even need to be careful of OVER looking the simple protections. Like gates, cracks, pockets, small spaces......etc Thanls again! Ya'll are so Great!

Can also use insulators that set the wire 6 inches from the posts and grounded fence.

Pulsating current gives them a chance to get away and not have the muscles contracted continuously so that they can't. That's how I understand that part of it.

Yep! The entire fence is space out 4 inches from the chicken wire. Yes I use chicken wire. It was free- thats why the electric fence wire! Any way.... All of the electric is 4 inches out...except the stupid gate that has the 2x4 welded wire on it. It was an old gate I re-used aswell. When i got to the gate I was out of the long insulators and had to use the short ones. BIG mistake especially with out the chicken wire to keep them from reaching through the gate wire!! I have the gate unhooked right now and as soon as I get home I will re skin the gate with chicken wire. The charger is overkill I know! But I always build EVERYTHING atleast 4 times as strong as it should be. I would rather spend a lil extra time and money in the beginning than have to blow it later on repairs. Wether its a 40 ft trailer or a chicken coop I over engineer everything. Its just a habbit! GUess this is what I get for not building my own gate.... I was trying to recycle old building material and save money. LOL Guess thats what I get for trying to change my ways.
