I had a scare with my emu chick today and thought I would pass this warning on. If you, someone in your family, or your friends come over and they smoke keep a close eye on where they dispose of their cigaretts when they get finished smoking. I had my emu chick out in the backyard today while my sister was here and she was smoking and just throwing them on the ground when she was done. My emu chick being the silly thing that he is snook over around her and ate two of them. It wasnt but a few minutes and I saw a change in his body language and just a few minutes after that he started pukeing. I frantically called the vet to try to see what I should do for him but the vet had already went home for the day. I think he is fine now though since he puked them back up. I gave him a really big bowl of lettuce, apples, and carrots to try and hopefully push what might be left of the cigarretts on through his system and out the back end and he chowed down like he normal does. I got him out again late this afternoon to run around a little while and he acted normal so I think it just made him a little sick. But I still wanted to pass the warning on to all the other emu owners to keep all of you from having the scare I had. From now on no one is smoking around the emu, if I would have lost him I dont know what I would have done im extremly attached to him.

They will and do eat anything .glad he is ok . My guys will attack anything I drop. a while back one of mine ate some old wet sweetfeed . She was bloated and throwing up for a few hours and couldnt even stand up.I think it might have fermented a bit. (drunk) By the next morning she gotten it all up and has become a bit more selective in her diet. I have since made every effort to be sure everything is out of reach. My yard has never been cleaner. and who visits someones house and throws their butts on the ground.

Just about had a smack-down a few weeks ago b/c a contractor's helper was throwing cigarette butts on the ground. I went out, had an old-fashioned hissy-fit and told him I wanted every single butt OFF MY LAWN, and that if I lost a chicken due to its eating a cigarette butt, someone ELSE'S butt was going to be in a sling....

I've asked him to clean up his butts, he has till the end of the project (nxt week) THEN I'll throw a hissy fit, if he still doesn't clean up, he's in for a surprise, he won't be getting much work from the company I work for (Condo mgmt) and he's just put in a bunch of bids. One of the Mgrs here already refuses to use him b/c it's taken him over 2 months now to get the work done at my place

Don't wait until the end. He needs to be cleaning up every day. And he should NEVER be throwing cigarette butts on the ground period. My husband is a smoker - he doesn't throw butts on the ground though. That's just rude.

I like coming to this section cause I think emu are so cute!

I had to comment on the butts...

I have a rule that NO ONE leaves their butts in my yard. I expect them to put the butts in their pocket or vehicle and take them home with them! I don't want that crap littering my yard or stinking up or my trash recepticles!

I smoke. Yes it is a dirty habit and the lengths I go to amaze even myself.

But stories like this make me livid! Smokers making all smokers look bad.

These are not just smokers these are inconsiderate or immature individuals. .
People who give all smokers a bad name. No doubt they have other inconsiderate activities that take place not related to smoking.

NEVER not even as a kid when I started smoking LITTERED my butts.

I do not get my smoke on others.
Even during a lawn concert I ask everyone around me outside if it is OK. I make sure I am not sitting by any kids to start with.
They almost always say yes, and thank me for asking.
I pay attention to the smoke in case the wind is blowing it on someone, even if they gave permission I move or put it out.

No trash can - it's my nasty habit and I have a little nasty metal thing in my purse for my butts.
