I got my chicks a year ago from a TSC and the girl that was taking care of them was really good with them. She was even talking to the baby chicks. She gave me the impression that she cared about them.

Can we get pictures? The McMurray one doesn't sound like a light brahma

I am fairly (not 100%) it is a light Brahma based on chick pics at McMurray, Meyer, and even a thread somewhere on here. Apparently there is a lot of variation. It just kind of threw me off when the feathers were growing in black ... I also have a Dark Brahma which I’m fairly sure is one of the chipmunk ones (since dark Brahmas are actually pencilled or partridge or something). It’s large size compared to the others that hatched same day, eh, I guess it’s due to their particular line being the super big Brahmas??

(Please disregard the Faverolle in the middle - she’s had an eye issue since arrival which I am addressing. It does seem to be slowly improving with flushing and meds. Her wing looks bald because the saline flush dribbling down. I plan on a little bath once I get the eye sorted out. )

If you buy chicks from tractor supply BE CARFUL! Inspect each chick carefully!!! They never get me the right breeds and all the chicks are always half dead when i get them. So make sure to look up the breed and compare. I find everyone at my Tractor supply is very very lazy! The chicks never have enough food or water. They always have pasty butt! Then they wonder why the chicks die! Give me your thoughts on your local tractor supply or feed store.

I'm pretty sure sick and/or dead ones are tossed out without any thought because they are (mostly) inexpensive. I have heard from a family member that the 'sick' ones are taken to a 'sick room', which translates to 'someone take it or it is getting pitched'. I can't confirm the imaginary sick room, but it is a sad and awful thought.

I once (and never will again) made the mistake of getting chicks from different locations, TSC, along with a couple local places. Not sure where it started, but some chicks were sick. I didn't know and I dumbly put them all in the same brooder-
you can imagine how that turned out. I lost most of them in just a couple days. Heartbreaking. I called around and my deceased chicks were replaced with healthy ones that were either free or cheap. (I got some bonus babies!)

This was a one-time occurrence, and it was likely my fault for getting them from different places and lumping them together right away.

All other experiences with TSC and the like have been pleasant. Healthy birds and good staff. (I don't hold them accountable for the wrong breeds. It happens. I love them anway.)

I made the mistake of getting some day olds from a feed store that had some type of respiratory infection. Only two survived and now I have to deal with that every time my chickens get stressed. I didn’t have the heart of culling them all and start all over. I know I have to deal with this as long as I keep the flock going. I paid a high price for my mistake

That first one isn't a light brahma. It may be a dark, but it isn't a light

Here’s the McMurray vid for Dark Brahma chicks. They are chipmunks. The McMurray vid for Light Brahma Chicks shows largely black chicks.

At any rate I guess I’m covered for having Light Brahmas. I’ll either have one or two!
