I picked up 8 day old chicks Thursday to place under my broody. I feather sexed all 8 because I only wanted females. Was I successful? Only time will tell. Wouldn't it be great if I got all 8 correctly sexed. I'll keep you up to date.

So what was your method for picking them willkatdawson and new2chooks?
I've done my own feather sexing and I have marked the ones I think are little cockerals. At 3 days old the little pullets feathers will already be developing on the wing tips and they are noticeably longer/bigger then the cockerals. I can also see the ones with the stubby little wings also have little saw tooth combs while the ones I think are pullets (with the longer wing tips) are smooth. There is no noticeable difference in leg size or thickness yet.

If the small feathers on the end of their wings are all the same length then it's a boy. If they are alternating tall and short then you've got a female. This has to be done during the first 2 days of life.

Out of the 4 plymouth partridge rocks I think I only have one pullet.

Out of the 4 splash blue laced wyandottes I know I have one female and one male, two I can't tell yet. Moral of the story, not all breeds can be feather sexed! Live and learn I guess. Oh well that means next time I have a broody I can put some more eggs under her.
They will be 5 weeks old on the 15th
See if you think I'm right

Roo for sure

Yes, feather sexing only works in those chickens that have been bred to have that sex linked trait. I don't know which breeds they are, but unfortunately, none of mine have it.
