Was so mad I nearly beat my roo to death.

I have tried the carrying around thing and am in the process of trying it again with another roo. I have not had a lot of success with this maybe I don't carry them around long enough, If and when it fails he will go to freezer camp with the rest. I have one good roo, and one of his sons to young to know for sure if he will get aggressive or not. but Prince Charles is (my aggressive rooster) has got little time left, I have small grandchildren and don't want them to be afraid to go out in the yard when the chickens are out. Centrarchid, if you don't have the broom with you does he still behave?

I think that a Rooster being aggressive is the NORM rather than the exception. An aggressive rooster is merely "doing his job", in my opinion.

My Top Rooster, "Oro Blanco de Gallo", is like that...but the other roosters are not aggressive towards me. I suspect that IF I got rid of "Oro Blanco"....then the "successor" Top Rooster would probably become aggressive. I think it is "built-in" to the position of Top Rooster.

There is no one besides me that goes into my chicken-yard with the one or two rare exceptions of 2 neighbors who also have chickens. So, I have no need to "worry" about the aggressiveness. I just NEVER turn-my-back on Ole "Oro Blanco". He and I have had a few skirmishes...he has lost each confrontation....but he still "protects HIS territory". He is a GOOD ROOSTER and will call the hens to eat...will NOT eat until they do...and won't let the other roosters eat before the hens do. It IS truly HIS chicken yard.
I LIKE that "mean old rooster"...and I respect that he is just "doing-his-job". When my Boxer-dog, "Crockett", goes in the chicken yard with me...he keeps ole "Oro Blanco" away from me. But, "Oro Blanco" is dumb enough to have challenged that dog a couple of times. I have had to call "Crockett" back....to keep ole "Oro Blanco" alive!

IF I had children around......."Oro Blanco" would have been DINNER a LONG TIME AGO. It's just not necessary here because it is only me to contend with that Rooster.......and I'm a lot better "battler" than he is ( I cheat !!) I'll use a shovel, rake, baseball bat, heavy boot, etc....to make sure I win. It's probably good for BOTH of us....keeps us ALERT !!! Ha-Ha !!!
I don't abuse that Rooster....but I watch-out for him. He's like that "Kung-Fu houseboy" that Peter Sellers had in one of those "Pink-Panther" movies. Sneaky and lethal !

I doubt that I would be willing to let any small children near a grown rooster. Too much chance of injury. And I don't think that Roosters are "trustworthy". I believe it is their NATURE to be AGGRESSIVE.

just how I see it.

I had an experience like this last year. We had a rooster that wasn't really the boss, he was more like the lieutenant. when checking the boxes for eggs he scurried around me and jumped at my face. luckily i still have both of my eyeballs, but it was scary. Reacting i backhanded him across the coop and kicked him outside for 3 days. (in a run) after that he simmered down and received the moniker of "Popeye" He was my only Australorp. I miss him he was nabbed along with the rest of my flock on the tragedy of Halloween 2010. I don't blame popeye for his actions since he was just doing his job, but man that hurt.

i've always thought it was a roos job to be aggressive. when i was a kid we had a big game roo. had to carry a stick around him and give him a good thump if he jumped at you. but i know he killed 2 hawks, an owl, a fox, and at least 3 possums, no one messed with his girls but him. he wasn't the sharpest tack in the box though. even after he killed it he would keep attacking the body till he was exhausted.

"Whapped it's head against the roost". If that's the point you are at, why not just kill it? I have no problem with killing ANY animal, but I do have problems with abuse.
