Was told a Sapphire Gem but not too sure…what do y’all think? My sons buddy was leaving the country for work and have him a couple hens. TIA!

Could be a Blue Australorp then.

IIRC, Sapphire Gems have yellow skin. Though I could be mistaken on that.

A Blue Australorp would have almost black eyes and never bright orange. It could theoretically be a Blue Marans but most hatcheries sell the feather-legged French/APA variety These are almost definitely Sapphire Gems which have variable skin color

My Sapphires Gems from Hoover Hatchery. Since they are hybrids you will see a variety of physical traits within a flock.

My Blue Australorps do not necessarily have the very dark eyes that SOP Black Australorps are supposed to have.

I don't know if that's due to their color variety or to being hatchery stock.

I’ve had her for a couple of years and always just wondered. I currently have 10 sapphire gems and 10 cinnamon queens about 5wks old and 2 blue Australorps all from Hoovers. Have never had any of these breeds. I know it’s hatchery quality but I am excited for a new breed experience. The CQ pullets are the calmest ever!
