Hi everyone! I have a duck who I have been treating for almost a month for a really serious weasel attack wounds...she is doing well not completely healed yet, but I have been putting Neosporin on her twice a day after a nice clean bath. she is now extremely oily she almost looks uncomfortable, because she's so oily. who here thinks I should give her a bath or should I wait until the Vaseline treatments are over...she still gets two baths a day but without soap it will not take all that oil from the Vaseline and Neosporin off. I was going to use Dawn dish soap, but I'm also afraid of getting it in her eyes. I think she's actually getting her eyesight back 'cuz my first initial thought was she was blind, but her eyes seem to be healing she may not have full vision. I really didn't think she would make it this long considering her skull was exposed...I have seem to be doing the right thing. I just don't want to do one mess up and have it go downhill any suggestions please. I will attach a picture of her. she actually looks wet, but it's just so much oil. Thank y'all in advance..hope y'all have a great day!! :hugs

Let's get some other opinions in here @Miss Lydia @Cayuga momma @CayugaJana
I don't know much about ducks, but I would be inclined to not give a bath with soap, just continue with what you have been doing since you are still putting on the ointments, she'll be greasy again in no time.

It's great that her eyesight seems to be coming back, sounds like you have done a really good job taking care of her.

I wouldn't wash her in dawn unless your going to stop with the Neosporin, def stop with the Vaseline it has no healing properties in it. Since she looks so good maybe from here on give her a good bath with dawn. Then start using Veterycin spray for wounds and infections. It's non oily and great stuff. Lets see what @casportpony thinks since she has treated wounds before.

It looks like you have been taking excellent care of her. I wouldn’t worry too much about her feathers being oily for now. The neosporin is/was more important than her looking pretty so don’t worry about that. She probably will molt soon. If she were mine, I would be upping the protein in her diet so she has quality feathers coming in. I agree with the others. Since she’s over the hump, I’d transition to something non oily. The spray they mentioned is great for wound care. But it’s pricey. If you don’t have it in your area, you can look up a recipe. It’s basically a really dilute bleach and salt water.

Thank you everyone!!! Here is a close up of Daisy's wounds she is still pretty bad. The stupid weasel took half her head...I have been feeding her hard boiled eggs...to help with the regrowing of skin and healing... Also been giving her electrolytes and vitamins. Thank you so much for the advice.

Makuna honey is also great for preventing infections, natural antibiotic
