Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

And you put them there at night and just left them? How were they in the morning? I'm totally freaking out that Lucy is going to kill them if left unsupervised. I also have to figure out a tiny temporary feeder and waterer for the nest box before Lucy shows them where the food and water are outside the box, on the coop floor. Oi! This is work.

No, I put them under the mom in the mid-afternoon. she took right to them. and them to her. I checked on them every few hours . But every mom can be different I guess

I had a silkie before who would steal chicks. She couldn't get enough.

The EE who I gave the brahma chicks to last summer tried to kill them when I tried putting them under her in the daylight. I went back after dark and tried again. Them being under her sleeping while she slept did the trick. Tried to rip my hand off the next morning when I checked them.

Did you ever get an urge you just couldn't resist, and you add up your order and realize the "6" chickens you are "allowed" to have turned in to say......21???

The chicken math has hit the fan

I honestly think it to be very much like when we were raising goats. There were years you could not get doe kids for anything. Then some years were nearly all doe kids and some years were a near even split. IMHO it is things far beyond our knowledge or comprehension. I think IF there were a known way to control the m/f ratio nobody would end up with excess males.

OK. That's good to know. I did drop the temp in the one bator that I can control to the lowest factory recommended setting of 99.3 (instead of 99.5). The other bator was kept at it's factory setting since it is an Eco model and you can't really control the temp easily.

So... according to the Chinese calendar, what year is it? The year of the rooster?

Took our 12yo Aussie in to the vet today to get checked and get shots. He has a testicular tumor. So he is gonna get neutered in a week. only a 15% chance that it is cancerous. But he is old, so if we get a few more years out of him I am willing to put a few hundred down on him. DW is sick and it is raining here, so indoor chores for me today. Hopefully after her nap she will still be up to seeing the Hobbit.
Sorry to hear about your pup! Hope for the best.

So DH just told me if we had a dog, and not chickens, we wouldn't have such a big "Loved and Missed" photo album.

I missed this... I have been using the WW recipe for cakes and cupcakes for 10+ years. 1 box cake mix, 1 can diet soda - clear for light cake, coke/dark for dark cakes. It bakes up pretty nicely and is VERY moist, if you can get past the soda-ey taste. I love funfetti + diet 7UP (or fresca). And my birthday is in a few weeks.... hehehe!

My posts are like blog entries... I dislike it. lol...

GUESS WHAT!?!?! I got my nest box built today! It looks great, and makes the rest of my upcycled coop look like... well upcycled. I'll post pics tomorrow, obviously it's a little dark out.

Jess - Let me know if you need anything to keep those chickies. I have a few lights, even a ceramic bulb. I used a rubbermaid tub, a huge one, and it worked perfect. I can disinfect it again and bring it up to you, if you need it.

Oooh! And I candled the eggs in the bator that RainyDayChicken gave me, and they're ALL fertile! I'm so excited!

Thank you Richard!

I'm a little worried because one of them has a hairline fracture in it, but I can see it's eye and the little veins!!! What do I do!? Can I seal the crack somehow so it won't spread? It's got eyes...
