Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

I have been replaying our visit over and again in my head the past couple of days. I had such fun when you both came over! It's nice when others appreciate your set-up because it makes me take another look at it and appreciate it with fresh eyes, thinking "Yeah, I guess it's not bad". It works for us and that's all that matters. As far as our fat, fluffy chickens - I do appreciate them every day. Aren't those giant English girls a riot? Giant bodies and timid little personalities.

It was NO problem getting the eggs. Heidi was thrilled to share because who doesn't get excited over others hatching your grandchicks?

I love the video. Was Frodo able to get all the eggs underneath her?

Frodo is just barely able to keep those eight eggs under her. In fact, the first morning, there was one that was outside and cold...hopefully it hadn't started yet. Since then I've helped her to tuck her eggs at night to make sure no one is left out! I do hope to take a photo of her very soon so you can see her all pancake-flat over those eggs!

Once again I'm trying to catch up. This time I did some quotes as I was cruising thru, so here goes.............

Oh dear, I thought I already was on the thread for imperfect Washingtonians.

Oops!
ChickAudie, we really do try very hard to maintain a harmonious thread and welcome everyone. I do hope you'll stick around for a while.
X2 ChickAudie! and
SadieSue, I haven't see you here much, I'm assuming it's your acting that's keeping you extra busy. How is that going???

As for insulation. The bees have normally removed it well away from the comb. Any that may be still on the comb is just cut off.
If you ever want to know if you have pure honey. put about a teaspoon of it in the bottom of a bowl. Carefully add cold water to cover it. Now just gently swirl the bowl. Pure honey will take the shape of honey comb, fake or diluted will not. Corn syrup is often used to cut honey.
That is SO COOL, I'd never heard it before but it's something I'm going to try to remember. Love it! Thanks for sharing!

That's how it is here at my home. I can yell and be in a bad mood anytime I want, everyone else HAS to be nice or be quiet.
That's DEFINITELY how I expect MY world to be, too!

Another one after my own heart! Yeah BBQ goat ribs - Yummy. Curried Goat, Moroccan goat stew...maybe I'll save a leg and have a party here this summer for any goat (food) lovers.

I've never tasted goat, is it anything like lamb? Can I come and taste it too?

So we have been microwave free in this house for about 6 months now and I'm amazed and impressed that the adjustment wasn't hard at all! I LOVE the way my food tastes when it hasn't been "nuked". Anyone else microwave free?
In about 1995 I had to choose between a toaster oven and a microwave, so I chose the toaster oven because it can make toast and a mw can't. People couldn't believe I could live without one! Like, how can you warm up leftovers and such?

After a couple of years I bought another mw and still have both. I like each for what it does best.

I went and talked to the feed store lady yesterday. She is going to see what her mill guy can do for all purpose and today I'm going and getting some scratch and am gonna try layer pellets. Since most of my young ones will be gone this weekend, I'm gonna go ahead and switch. The pullet I'm keeping is pretty darn close to being old enough to start on layer and comparing her layer pellet to the all purpose I'm getting and even her non medicated grower, they were all pretty comparable so I'm gonna go ahead and switch to the layer. I know she got a shipment in yesterday of the layer but I forgot the price. I do know that her scratch a few dollars cheaper than at The Shopper.

I bought some layer from her and so far so good. It's about $17 and I love that it's milled locally.

:lau :goodpost: Yeah I know I'll get a white egg...but hopefully I'll get a white egg almost every day of the year! That right there makes the white egg worth it ;)

Well, I was gonna give ya a thumbs up, but can't find the emoticons on my phone! My whities were the only ones that laid thru this winter so they've earned their keep!!

Oh, you think you will be able to just have one huh? Good luck with that one. Those things are like crack, once you have it you must have more and more(I have never tried crack, but have friends recovering from it)

YOU ARE NOT KIDDING! I wanted just two and now I have 6! Why oh why?

So DH just told me if we had a dog, and not chickens, we wouldn't have such a big "Loved and Missed" photo album.  :smack

That made me laugh!!!

Question for those of you who've gone from small "backyard" flocks to larger flocks (20+ birds):

Do you ever stop naming them and thinking they're ALL your favorites? I'm trying to decide if I want to get rid of a couple of last year's birds either this spring or next, and just thinking about who to get rid of made me want to cry. And yet, I KNOW I'm not going to be the type of chicken owner to keep birds who aren't laying. They cost way too much to feed these days! So I guess I wonder, if all 12 of my big girls are absolutely indispensible because I'm too attached, how many birds does one need to have before it just kinda like "Oh, we have too many. That one and that one can go, yada yada"...

I don't name them all at hatch or when I acquire them. If a name comes to mind or pops out at some point that's great. So I do have some that don't have names. I am learning after almost 5 years of having chickens, not to get quite so attached.

SoI am not supposed to be doing anything like being in the computer orthis kind of thing on my phone. My kitties tripped me while I was coming down the stairs this morning and I fell down like 6 of them hitting my head at the bottom on the hardwoods. I probably have a mild concussion and the doctor wants me to rest my brain. You can tell I listen well.

I am going to go now.

We lost our internet a few days ago and, man, its irritating! We have Frontier and have been discussing Charter for some time now. I still dont want TV or landline phone so i hope i can find a decent deal without bundling. Using 4G on my phone is killing my battery!
Time to go change the bedding in the coop!

Carolyn, one thing I've never had and always wanted was a toaster oven. It could easily replace my microwave for certain functions, and I could also have toast every once in a while, or even make myself some tiny pot pies in it instead of family size stuff. It would be nice on nights DH isn't home for dinner. And I could get rid of the toaster that we never use. (We only buy bread once every other month as a treat because GF bread is ridiculously expensive).

I'm not naming mine yet either. I decided I could probably get rid of Martha and Pip. Martha is a light blue egg laying EE who has never laid better than every other day and also hasn't laid an egg in 3 months, and she's not molting. Dude! Come on girl! Pip is my Welsummer who doesn't like to be touched, although she's laid a nice sm/med copper egg every other day all through winter. SO....if anyone wants those 2 birds they're $40 for both. I'm going to keep my coop at under 18 birds. It's too small to house more unless I add another roost and clean it out weekly. No time for that :(
