Thank you bunches guys. You really got me thinking about making one for our show potluck. I even had a dream about how to decorate it. Now I just need to figure out if I can pull it off.
Today's Egg production - see the funky one?

When I saw it in the nest box, I thought it was a soft-shell, but it's not.
Here is a close up.

Wrinkled shell:
"
A hen may lay a wrinkled egg if she has been handled roughly or if for some reason her ovary releases two yolks within a few hours of each other, causing them to move through the oviduct close together. The second egg will have a thin, wrinkled shell that's flat toward the pointed end. If it bumps against the first egg, the shell may crack and mend back together before the egg is laid, causing the wrinkle."
That is out of my book, "The chicken Encyclopedia". Great book, just thought I would share.
OK so I am really having trouble keeping up right now!

hope ya enjoy it here This is a great place with LOTS of very nice people.

To those who have had recent losses / tragedies Sorry to hear and hope all gets better soon.

FYI I have been stealing time on a friends plasma cutter. I have 42 no mess chickens cut out. Not sure how many Will be done for Monroe but I should have several since I still have 18 from the last hatch !

Speaking of plasma. The latest on mine is that they are pretty sure they know what is wrong so now just a matter of repair time. Jeanine said she hopes to deliver it when she comes to visit Saturday but not sure yet.

Hi all,

I posted in the new member forum, but thought I would also introduce myself here too as I am a Washingtonian (allbeit a fairly new Washingtonian).

Been enjoying poking around this site for some time and have loved all of the good information, awesome humor, and chicken camaraderie. Thank you!

We have six lady hen friends (Amerucana, Barred Rock, Buff Orpington, Rhode Island Red, Gold Laced Wyandotte, and a Dominique) and a surprise rooster (Cuckoo Maran), all hatched September 7th (ish) of 2012. They spent the winter in a very large cardboard box in our tiny house (never again), and are all happily outside in their awesome coop my partner designed and built. The gang spends their days 'free ranging' around our backyard, basking in the ever elusive Seattle sunshine, wading in the 'tiny stream' that runs through our yard, and 'hunting' for worms in the garden.

Just last week our Buff Orpington laid her first egg! You would have thought she won a Nobel Prize the way we celebrated that small egg. Its been about a week and she is continuing to lay an egg a day (give or take a few days). We are anxiously waiting for our other lady hen friends to catch on to how cool it is to lay eggs.

Anyways, I think that is enough for now. Excited to join you all!

Peace.
Well HELLO, and another

for ya from ME! Great story about your chicks there. And we would love to meet you at the WFF show in Monroe hope you can make it.

welcome to the group! You made it just in time to make it to the WA Feather fanciers show in Monroe next weekend!

Wow- cardboard box- that must have been super interesting (or not? LOL)

I suppose I don't have much room to talk......I've got an aquarium in my living room full of chicks for entertainment right now...and a brooder in my mud room...

my wood shop is nearly complete. table saw (Sarahkatie got the other one today), chop saw, lathe, band saw, routers, router table, etc, etc. Need a planer. Plus the hand tools, chisels, planes, scrapers, sharpening tools and all the other stuff a guy likes to have on hand, nust in case.

RCMS is a very nice tool.

funny thing- Craftman used to be such excellent tools, but their power tooks are such junk now, IMHO. I bought a Craftsman Compound miter saw on sale once, cut for maybe a total of 2 hours- easy stuff like 2x4's, and the motor burned up. Went to Sears to get it replaced- because they offer a replacement guantee, and they told me they would REPAIR it. I needed my saw NOW, not in 2-3 weeks for them to dink around and repair it. After arguing with them for 30 minutes, I begrudgingly left my saw in their hands to repair. Then, when they got it back to me , almost 3 weeks later (after i had to borrow a friend's saw for my house project) they claimed it was all repaired, "good as new". I told them I wanted to try it out before I left the store, and they said it was against policy to have customers do that (?). When I got home, tried to cut a 2x4, the brushes were sparking and the saw died in mind-cut on a 2x4. STILL the manager tried to tell me all they could do was repair it. I was so ****** off by then I began raising my voice, calling them rip-off artists, telling them that if they did not give me all my money back right now I was going to launch the mother of all complaints- and spent an hour fighting with these guys. They finally gave me my money back. Never, ever, ever, ever will I buy a power tool at Sears!

Rigid works like the best Milwaukee or Makita- at 1/2 the price!

I gave away a lathe on CL, becuase i was movig into a rental after being in my house for 17 years, and no room to store it. man, wish I had that now!

What will you make in your woodshop? Is it just "because" or are you going to begin making a craft to sell or?

EVERYONE COMING TO MONROE on the 16th, please visit THIS THREAD: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/751538/monroe-wa-wff-show-meetup-potluck-join-us

Please reply in the thread with what you can bring.

I would LOVE to meet around 11 to start the food, so people can hang for a couple hours before needing to leave for work and other Saturday afternoon/evening functions.
Thanks, Jess, for organizing.
I went to the thread and put myself down for a large veggie tray and a couple dips.
I'm so excited to go to Monroe!

Quote: Door is open! Also my prototype workbench is nearly finished. After I use this bench for awhile and decide upon changes (if any) I will then remake the bench. So if anybody wants to give me their planer, jointer that they have just laying around I'll be happy to put it to use.

I just want to throw this out there for future thought. Once we find and buy the right place, I would like to breed Ameraucanas, not EE's, but true Ameraucanas. It will be a few months for us to find, buy and settle into a place but I just want this out there so that if you breed them you can keep me in mind.
Speaking of buying a place, I found a place that I will be going to look at here really soon. There are three houses on the property, which is great because my BIL and his DW live here with us (in their own apt.) and we were hoping to find a place where they a could come with us. There is also two barns a shop for DH and many out buildings that could be coops. Also (and this is a great part) the property is 29 acres in Duval. I am trying not to get to excited like I did with the last one but I do have my

. So we will see, and I will of course let ya'll know how it goes.

Quote: My chop/mitre saw is a Craftsman, but I bought it when they first came out with the 12" so you can chop a 2x6. Have never had a problem. You're right about their stuff today though. Junk.
No crafts yet. (do have a very nice jig saw) I have need to make several cabinets for the house + some bookcases. Then there's the end tables that I don't like (no storage)that I want to replace, then there's that blanket chest I want to do, then there is the candlestick holders and some wall art, and, etc, etc, etc.

GOOD MORNING!

Has anyone owned a great pyranese? They're suppose to be great livestock guardians ( with consistent training of course) your thoughts the breed?

DFH wants to get one of those, he LOVES big dogs, and so do I, but I get sad when I think about the bigger they are, the shorter their lifespan
sad.png
We still might get one when we move, they are GREAT family dogs.

Alright, I feel ashamed because instead of thinking Production Barred Rock, I thought Pabst Blue Ribbon first. That'd be a very interesting bird.

My first thought was I didn't know there are Professional Bull Rider chickens.

Leavenworth hands down. I love the mountains and that area is so beautiful.

I got married again in 2009 and never got a honeymoon. Perhaps I can talk the hubby into one this summer???

You should!!! You know, considering there is no airfare, it's a pretty nice, inexpensive vacation!

Can't wait to see all the wonderful things you're gonna make!!!

Quote: Awe, thank you! Again, I'm excited!!!!
Quote: Thanks for voting!!! I am thinking Option 2 is going to be the way to go! DFH birthday is the day after the date we originally chose, which is fine and he can never forget our anniversary, but he wants a month with no other important dates in it. So if we can move it to July, there is a room in a castle I really really want!!!
Quote: That's good to know! For some reason it made me giggle

There's no way I'm going to catch up on y'all, so I'll just jump in with both feet. I caught the devil's own cold, and since I wasn't able not to do chores it's dragged on and on- calving season, chickens to care for, and oh, yeah, a squirrel is eating my house, what fun. And I lost the omega cow and her calf from habitual bottom of the pecking-order disorder, which makes me sad and grouchy but also gave me another couple of hours of work every day while I was trying to prevent the inevitable. Some days I hate farming.

ANYWAY: my friend who got the extra BLRW rooster that I got from Tiff wrote me this afternoon; he has died after a brief illness, as the saying goes. She wants another BLRW; I should just give her Bjorn and get a new one to breed to the two hens I have left (Sylvia having perished from eating all sorts of non-food items) but in any case, does anyone know of a BLRW cockerel or friendly rooster available? And a blue or splash Ameraucana LF rooster; the owls got the one I was going to get from my cousin. I'm also going to need another SSH rooster this year, which may well be a trick.

Everything's laying, I've got to get a clipping table built and a sheep comb bought so I can shear Baaaachus, who is getting to big to go back to his pen, I have a dress to wear when my daughter gets married in July but am still freaking out about shoes, the dogs are still old and stinky and demanding and I mop a lot more than I want to.

She's getting married in July and you already have your outfit?

You are my hero! Hope you feel better soon SF!

ONLY because you asked..... I think a dinner cruise would be a disappointment. Mediocre food and no way to get off when you get tired of it. Also avoid horse drawn carriages! They're cute to watch, but when you're in the carriage all you see is horse behind, dirty streets, and the smell of exhaust from the car around you.

What MOOD do the two of you crave? That's a big factor in deciding.

Thank you Carolyn, always nice to hear stories from people who have actually been there. LOL! I have been warned about those horse drawn carriages before!

Leavenworth! My wife and I go there every year! Much better than being in a big city.

I am just imagining floating the river after the chaos of a wedding....le sigh, peaceful....

I really loved reading that story! I'll bet you thought winter would never end, having chickens bunk with you!

X2!! I just had to move my chicks to the basement! They are so stinkin' dusty!

HEY CR, the RPM of the motor is 1750 so the 7" should bring it down to the 400rpm range. If not I'll go bigger, don't want to use a rheostat although that may be a "dial in" solution.
