Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

So how do you keep it dry?! I'm planning a 6x10 run that will be covered but with all the sideways rain we get, I'm preturbed at how to keep it dry.

I love this!

My pen is pretty narrow, only 5' wide. It's covered with corrugated polycarbonate/fiberglass sheets (the stuff from Lowes) and it overhangs the edge of the coop. In our case the rain comes in from the South, right into their pen, so I understand exactly what you're talking about. I'd love it if the overhang was at least 12" but I couldn't do it where it's located. The other thing I have is a clear tarp that hangs down on the side of the pen to within about a foot of the ground. I use large cup hooks screwed into the wood at the top and the grommets on the tarp just hook on. The sand won't stay bone dry, but dry enough. Most of the time the rain isn't that bad, just those nasty storms we get some times. It isn't enough to be a major issue.

I know but hey I was doin the best I could. Then I soon learned I couldn't keep up with the maint. on a coop that big !

It would be so hard to get on your trailer too !

I have a question for all of you GF-bakers out there. Can I just follow a recipe that calls for regular flour and substitute GF flour, or do I need a recipe that calls for GF flour in the first place? Do baking times differ? HELP!
I have used a bunch of my regular (wheat type) recipes and just subsituted Pamela's bread & baking mix, cup for cup..works great.

I am bringing a few doz Silver Cuckoo Marans hatching eggs for sale to the show also, and Blue,Black & Splsh Jersey Giants eggs...

I think CR needs a slingling to carry Pierre around in !!!!!!!!

He IS a bit grumpy. But a good builder. Be nice to him if you ever need his carpentry skillz. Or just BBQ him some ribs all night and all day for him...right Dave?

Yes, I am quite a bit grumpy, a fair builder (good enough is perfect)

188 for us, we're going Hwy 2 because we think it's prettier. We'll come home Snoqualmie, 156 miles.

I have them on the counter, ready to pack.

:)

I can tell the difference in quality when I crack them open, just can't tell a taste difference. I really appreciate the help that is offered here. I am really awkward, so just in the last couple of days have been brave enough to really talk. I feel like I have totally over-posted today. I love my chickens, though they are just babies yet. I also have serious emotional connection with my parrots and horses, which most people think is weird. I have learned to embrace my "weirdness" and am just going to go with it. I am SO excited to get my first egg!! But it will probably be July before that occurs.

I was going to try to get a couple of already laying hens, but people are asking an arm, a leg AND your firstborn right now.

Hey, you have to be who you are. Do what makes you happy as long as you're not hurting anyone. There are a lot worse things in life to be emotionally involved with than animals.

And when your chicks do start to lay it's going to be all that much more special! I don't think you've over-posted at all. Obsessing about chickens is what BYC is for! Besides, humans have been domesticating animals for thousands of years. Watch the NOVA documentary about the history of dogs. Humans started hunting with wolves and feeding them probably about 100K years ago! That is how dogs came to be. It's in our nature to get emotionally involved with animals.
