Congrats! And what a beautiful picture! There are some real artists in this group, I love it!

I just went out to check for eggs and say goodnight to my sweeties and I found Willow, my beautiful blue Ameraucana dead in a nest box. I don't know what happened. I went out around 1pm to get eggs and say hello and all was well with them all. I even talked specifically to Willow and nothing about her seemed problematic. Could she have been egg bound? Her vent looks a little odd like stuck with some poop coming out...

I'm so upset, she was such a pretty bird and finally beginning to come around to me being her owner; she finally let me pet her when she was on the roost when the lights were on without a squawking fit.

Jess.... I am SOOOO sorry, what a terrible loss and rotten way to have it happen.

Take heart, people; I know I did it all wrong and my three turned out to be intelligent, polite, generous, productive folks anyway.
Just love them!

Now that's what I like to hear! There's hope for our world yet!

A question about new birds and quarantine.... Can I quarantine all new birds together, if gotten at the same time, even if gotten from different people? After a intro period, of course.... It looks like I'm getting two pullets from one person, and maybe Carolyn's Dash, at the Vancouver show.... I have space for quarantine, just have to cement the shelter arrangements as they aren't traditional coops....

I do know to bring them home in separate boxes ;-)

One is the shell to a washing machine turned on its side(I have plans for it to be a brooder someday, and I also have Many dog crates, 36"-42" front-to-back

....yes, I admit to being a crate hoarder ;-P.....

Any advice/comments are appreciated :-D

Sarah.... You'll want to keep the 2 pullets separated from the new roo during quarantine because they come from different "farms", thus they can bring different germs/bugs with them. I sure hope Dash won't be bringing anything with him but there's always a chance.

What age will the pullets be? If they are still small chicks and have never been outdoors I'm thinking they'll be pretty healthy bug-wise. But there could be other things that could be catching. Is this right folks?

If you have 2 dog kennels that are about 3' x 4', I would think that would work well -- one for the pullets & one for the my little roo. Right now I have my 4 little birds together in a kennel that size. And it was the size I was planning to use for quarantine if I'd gotten 2 pullets rather than chicks.

Here's a question for the more experienced "farmers": If you're bringing in young birds, say 2 months old, would it be acceptable to shorten their quarantine to 1 week? I'm thinking they would be far less likely to have anything catching. What would you say????

oops.. edited to correct sentence to say "1 week". sorry

I think technically they should be separate. I intentionally waited until I found the hens I wanted all from the same source. I had enough trouble quarantining them together, I didn't have anywhere to put a second cage to quarantine two groups or whatever.

Carolyn... 2 vs 1 what??? I thought quarantine was 30 days, or 1 month

The pullets will be 10-12 weeks.... I have spots to quarantine everyone... Crates and x-pens and lots of fencing...

oops.... I meant to say "shorten to 1 week" instead of 3-4 weeks.

I was just thinking today of a new project I need made to decorate my chicken house.........
Jess- wow- maybe the kids were just taking a mineral bath? I've got wine here for those kind of days!

ZGoatlady told me there was a chicken talk this evening in Enumclaw, but DH worked late and we didn't go. The speaker was a popular guy- Donald Weeks.

Laughing feather- since you are still in CA, can you be sure to bring the sun back up here?

The temporary roof blew off my temporary coop today so dodging hell and high water to get the chickens covered. Then I found the nut had come off the bottom of the feeder- spilled a full feeder on the floor of the tractor- and could not find that nut. I swear I am going to get one of those magnets w/a long handle that they sell at Harbor Freight. DH keeps saying those are not a necessary item when we are there and I always get guilted into putting them back. That unneccesary item could have retreived that nut rather promptly, I am pretty sure?

Had a couple bits of good news today- possibly some extra help and services for my son. That would be a blessing. Talked to an old friend- out of the blue decided to call her- haven't talked more than twice in 3 years. Something was telling me to call. Come to find out, she needed my call- and my help.

No work on the chicken house today- weather wasn't fit for ducks! We have absolutely GOT to get the chicken house done- we've got chicks bursting from the seams here! There's 16 in my back room, 3 silkies in my living room in a dog kennel, a broody in the temp chicken house (dog house) and 13 hens that want to run amuk outside freely-- and can't-- because they need a safe area away from our cats. Good grief- can ya rent family members? My DH is working like a dog at his job- and I need to clone him so he can also be here fixing my chicken house!

GET THE MAGNET ! ! ! Make sure you get the one that when ya pull the handle it releases. I use them all the time to sort/ load scrap ad pick up things I drop.

FirewifeJess, I'm sorry about Willow. Might I suggest planting a nice blueberry bush over her? Since she had blue coloring, I think it'd be nice to plant something that produces blue fruit. If she also laid blue eggs, that'd be a plus.

Illia has not been around for several months. Here is her avatar pic to show her awesome egg colors.

Yeah, I was going to say some time ago that I missed seeing Illia around here. Her posts were always so informative. Is she posting at all on the board? Has anyone spoken to her lately? I hope she and her family are okay...
Last I recall it sounded like she needed to get rid of most of her animals.
