Can you please post a list of NON-Monsanto seed companies ?

Remember this list can be missing some companies. There is also debates going on about what companies are telling the truth. After this list is a link to the companies that have taken it one step farther the list of ones that took the safe seed pledge.

Territorial is on the "safe seeds pledge" list and also pretty explicit about where they get seeds. It also explains why I couldn't find Holy Mole last year: Monsanto has bought the rights to that cultivar.

Beautiful sunny day and I'm off today. Got my gloves heating on the wood stove.
I place extra fire brick on top of stove and heat up my gloves, seed pots, plants, then place back in the window.
Really gets the seeds going that heated soil.

There is no screen on the bottom, it's totally open. It could easily be made securable, but our chickens are free range 24/7 within the fenced area, about 2/3 acre, with dog keeping predators out.


The internal 2x4s are untreated fir for roosting and I chipped off the top corners and trimmed some width off with a hatchet. If I make another unit like this, I'll look for some thick branches instead of hacking up perfectly nice lumber. The sides are smoke tinted polycarbonate which I'm not sure will work out in the heat of summer. Might have to paint it, or replace with plywood. But it looks nice and didn't need finished so I'm hoping it doesn't get too hot.

[COLOR=800000]okay, then dudette!  My DH is a SysEng . That means that besides him being able to make the homemade inCOOLbator, (which worked awesome) he can put a security camera system on the hen house that we can monitor remotely  hahaha.[/COLOR]

[COLOR=800000]I think on your tractor that the hens will choose the highest roosting point, and that would be the top of those nest boxes, where they probably will poop in them. I'd suggest perhaps putting the lids on the next boxes[/COLOR]. [COLOR=800000]That's a nice lightweight design![/COLOR]

My DH is a Server Dude, Alpha Geek/Tech Guru level. He works for the DOT and manages the servers for the data files which when project engineers don't get uppity and think they don't need to make sure roads and bridges meet up in the middle.


He usually gets home shortly before ten, since he's got to wait until people are gone to do some parts of his job, and even more often signs on to a secure account from home to monitor back-up jobs and other long runs.

And of course the words system upgrade send waves of terror through our household.

absolutely, get the chicken nipples and get them in there ASAP. Little chicks take right to them- they are naturally curious and will peck at the shiny nipple. Best thing ever!
Bonus- you can put out enough water to leave for a weekend or more without having to worry that they will dump over water, or mess it up.

Some of my bigger hens are clueless about the saddle-style waterer we made, but we are going to work on teaching them once they are moved. I have some ideas- like putting preferred food near the nipples so they 'accidentally" find the water.

well, it seems a lot of you use the nipple watering system, so will try it. Now I am off to find the supplies. thanks to all who replied

I had excellent luck with Victory Seeds. Very affortable and shipping was reasonable. I will re-evaluate once this next seed batch has sprouted.

I tried.............. Nichol’s Garden Nursery They are out of Oregon. Fast shipping. Reasonable cost. Extra seeds. We shall see how it goes. Last week or before that they sent me my Wallawalla sets. Nichols has been in business forever and the worst I've heard about them is that they run out of popular varieties of seeds early in the season. Their store is AMAZING if you can get to it, but wear blinders or have a cash-only budget when you go, because they have stuff -equipment and supplies and culinary herbs, to begin with- that nobody else carries.

As of an hour ago all four of my incubator Ameraucana chicks are OUT!

I'm waiting for the last to dry off before I take them down to my expectant broody Silkies and see how they take to mothering. I have a brooder available just in case. Still no action on the one little BLRW egg under the Silkies.

I'm watching the third baby out because she isn't up and hopping around like the others. I haven't determined if she's still just too tired since she only hatched last night or if she's got an issue with her legs. She's tried to stand up a few times and then flops down.

But I'm pretty happy, and relieved - 4 out of 4 of those fluffy yellow chicks are out. Whew.

When DH gets home we're going to try and see if we can figure out how to set up the Brooder Bottle Cap waterers. These are caps with nipples that just screw onto a soda or water bottle. We poke a hole in the bottom of the bottle to ensure water flow. The trick for us because we are somewhat builder/mechanically challenged is going to be "how to hang the soda bottle in the coop". I have some wire - thinking if I string it through two holes on the bottom of the bottle we can... Oh I don't know. We'll see how this goes. Should be a simple thing but I'm afraid I'm going to end up like this -
