Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

rory,
hello and welcome!

I have 20 chicks that are a week old and you are welcome to have a few of them. there are easter eggers, and brown egg layers in the group. they are not sexed, but you could bring back any roos you dont want.
americaunas, astralorp, rir, and at least one other kind but I don't remember right off. these came from eggs i got from a gal near auburn that I incubated. (the eggs not the gal)

At what age is best to process Cornish X? I got the 5 free ones last week and was thinking 10,12 and 14 weeks to see any texture/taste difference.
8 weeks is usually about right. you would have to restrict feed to keep from getting very large bids at 12 and 14 weeks. I had an almost 5 lb average dressed weight last year on several hundred and none of them went much over 8 weeks.

Sorry to read about the lost animals. Hugs!

The colored Easter eggs are so pretty. We're lame this year and leaving the egg coloring up to the chickens.

Laughing Feather, you are so right on! The lady I bought that stacking toy from said it had been bought by Grandma.

Travis - your chicks are so cute!

Today my daughter left the back gate open. Two of our neighbors saw all of our 6-plus-a-backup-plan chickens. The one neighbor who gave us a bit of grief a while back was acting surprised as he saw another, then another, then another. DH is really hoping he didn't count all 7 and won't cause trouble for us. The cats out of the bag now, so to speak, and I no longer need to worry about them being discovered.

They are only getting feed for 12-14 hrs a day, and FF feed only. About 2-3 cups right now with 3 silkie chicks in with them. They are finishing it all yesterday and today. Prolly gonna wait a day or two before adding another cup.
I would give them full feed until about three weeks then when they are off heat and ready to run restrict feed. the reason is a lot of both bone and organ development happens early and you don't want to stunt that. you restrict feed as they get older to prevent them from putting on weight at a rate that the organs cant support. or to keep them the size you want at harvest.
