HAPPY EASTER EVERYONE

Yesterday eve had a visit from a large hawk, the Roos were on alert and the hens froze and got close to the ground. My friends the crows came to the rescue. About 6 showed up and literally escorted that hawk to far away places. You gotta love the crows.

I saw them do the same thing 2 years ago to a bald eagle. They chased him from their roosting/nesting area to places unknown. The whole resident flock (murder) got involved. They made so much noise I went out to see what the heck was going on. Even when he went to a large fir, just to the rear of my property to rest, they dive bombed him until he took off again to the S East. I've not seen him back.

Here's a tip for those of you who want to spice up those ham slices or ham sandwiches.
Take a whole canned beet and grate about 2 Tble spoons, add this to a small jar of creamy horse raddish. This will create a very pleasant shade of red/pink sauce. Apply a small amount to your ham. Enjoy.

I don't think you will be able to keep them alive that long - pigs! Their hearts and internal organs will give out if you don't put them on restrictions at around 6-7 weeks. We never go longer than 7 weeks. Course, the taste is somewhat based on what you feed them. They WON'T exercise on their own volition. We have 100 coming in two weeks

Happy Easter! Rejoice!

Now, if I can get dressed, do a quick lap of the back yard, get to church, get home and put the coleslaw together and animals tended, get to the egg hunt and Easter Dinner at my sister's, come home in time to tether the sheep out for a while, finish the chores (the hens have been laying in the afternoon, mostly)...

Oh, yeah, I need to check the cow who looked last night as if she was starting labor.

Happy Holiday! I need two of me on weekends as it is!
With my family gone, Easter is just another day.

I saw seagulls escorting a bald eagle away a couple of days ago.

The beet thing sounds good.

HAPPY EASTER!!

LET'S FIND OUT: WHOSE KIDS HAD CANDY FOR BREAKFAST??

At least this year I was wise and only put in only as much as they could tolerate for the morning, and told them there was more in the drawer. Except the chocolate bunny. I had to get dark chocolate because I needed dairy-free chocolate.

So far, so good! At least the weather will be good, they can go outside and ride their bikes if they get too wired. What a gorgeous morning! Sun at sunrise!! Whoodathunkit?
My son is having candy for breakfast- a very rare occassion indeed, but I can't say no to the kid with so many food allergies and intolerances his whole world is edited usually. Hes got Sun Sweet brand Jelly beans with natural food dyes from things like tumeric and beet juice, and some Divine dark chocolate bunnies. (BTW- There's a jewish company that makes dark chocolate dairy free - guaranteed peanut free bunnies I used to order from,) . We've got bacon and eggs for back up.

Has anyone used the parasitic wasps or nematodes that you can buy as fly control? i only had 3 hens last summer and the flies were awful then, I now have 8 hens and after the two nice days we've had the flies are getting bad already! l love my chickens but hate the flies. It wouldn't be so bad if we were on a farm or something, but we live in the city with a small yard, so the flies are right outside the door and frequently get in the house.

I used those hanging plastic water bags with the pheromone bait in it last year, and they did trap a lot of flies but they smelled insanely bad, and I wonder how many flies they were actually attracting to the yard that wouldn't have been in the yard to begin with.
