Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

That blue/black/splash thing is confusing.
Not really, once you understand it.
Blue is a dilution of black is all.

I have been messing with the Kippenjungle site & came up with this:
Enter a Silver Spangled male and a Blue-Breasted Silver female= 25% blue patterned silver w/incomplete spangling (may have to breed those back to the male)

OR:
Silver Spangled male to Blue Silver Duckwing female.............check that out.
Quite often, what you want just does not happen with the first generation.
You have to keep the best pullets & breed them back to their sire, or best cockerels back to their mother.
Sometimes it takes several generations to get the end result.
I usually bug genetic experts when I want to know for sure the course to take.

I'm new to the whole backyard chicken thing, but I am from Washington so I thought I would stop over here and say hello.

Pull up a chair and sit a while!

Anyone driving on I-5, watch out for Fed-Ex Ground (Purple and green Fed-Ex logo) hauling doubles. I have had to call 911 twice in the last 3 weeks on them for swerving across lanes of traffic. 3 weeks ago the one I called on got pulled over and had a permanently revoked CDL, was in HOS violation, and was drunk( I know this because the trooper called me to thank me for reporting it). Last night, one almost ran my set of doubles off the road. Unfortunately he did not get pulled over( crossed into Oregon before troopers could find him). I don't know if they are pushing their drivers hard or what, just wanted to warn you all that this is trending with Fed-Ex.
Wow, and Christmas rush on shipping packages has yet to happen.
Pushing their drivers would not justify drinking on the job !

Wow, That would be interseting to deal with. We had unwanted people on our property to!
This was a very unsettling situation.
I agree with whoever said to report it to the non emergency number, these people may be casing your neighborhood. Good thing you have the gun and the dogs!

That's pretty scary! Maybe folks need to contact FedEx and tell them they won't use their business if they keep endangering people on the roads like that.
Stay safe everyone.

I have two shot guns that are just inside my closet, no one better even THINK of stepping on my property with out my permission!! I have 6 foot fences all the way around, so if some got in, it's cause they jumped a fence! That's not cool!
How to visit Julie without getting shot:
1. Call ahead and set a time
2. Call again when almost to her place. Report location, model of vehicle, number of occupants in vehicle
3. Use Navy semaphores to signal arrival from OUTSIDE the fence
4. Wear Kevlar from head to toe

Just kidding ya, Jules!

One last- and I now have a date that things started going to heck this summer, the date of this pic, when the chicks were a month and a half old. I didn't take another photo of them, nor more than a few of anything, until way into September.

Well well! I am so glad Malvina has worked out (and worked!) for you. One just hates a good chicken to go to waste :D

She was laying an egg a day from about two weeks after the chicks hatched until she started to moult two weeks ago, too. I was going to get her to set in August, when she started hiding eggs, but that was sort of the epicenter for my Summer of Suckitude, so I suspect I'll try it again in February, or so. I like raising chicks under a broody a whole lot more than in my hall bathroom, I can tell you that.

I really need to get rid of my three extra roosters, though; the deal I had before fell through in a big way. I need to rationalize things so that I don't have a group outside the dog-proof fence. I don't want to put them on Craigslist because I don't like strangers coming to the house, and when I sent the four beautiful fat Hamburg cockerels to the auction I got $6. Not apiece, either: for all four. Didn't cover my cousin's gas!

Slaughtering them is the rational thing to do, except for my inability to use my hands dependably among other physical barriers to doing things right.

I saw a sign for a front door (or back) one time, it was hilarious and so true. It read: Our alarm system will go off it you break in. It will sound like gunfire and hurt a lot"

I wish I'd bought the sign, I've never seen another one like it!

How about a sign on the front door --

Our door is locked. Not for our protection, but for yours.

Or...

If you want to know my position on gun control, break in and find out.

Here is a story I wanted to share with you!

DH has always lived in the city.  I have been trying to convince him for years that we need to just high-tail it to BFE and live without the craziness (i.e. drunk truck drivers) not to mention Hilltop Tacoma has never been my dream spot.

Half of me came from a family that lived for open air and potato farmin' - it's in my blood!  Little did I know that all it took to convince DH, was my DAD!  They had one beer and by the time I interrupted that conversation - DH finally lit up like a light bulb!  It was the best look I have ever seen!  He realized we were working for nothing.  How all of our money goes to pay for gas just to make enough to pay a few bills.  A few bills we wouldn't have to have!!!

I'm excited that our property search can expand now to the far reaches and I don't have to be tied to a city!! YAY!

Marital bliss right here!   Can you imagine how many chickens I could have!!

Wet-blanketing a little, here (or why I don't move to BFE myself): remember, when you look at how much you pay for your place that the further it is from the nearest (grocery store, doctors office/public library/movie theater: we all have things we can't live without) the higher your effective housing payment. There's a whole lot of For Sale signs out Steamboat Island Road right now (which, by the way, has some nice 5-10-20 acre places, still) which I'm willing to bet were put up by people who got softened up by the fact that they were the last ones to get electricity back after the ice storm and then got hammered by $4 a gallon gasoline.

On the other hand: remember that everyone has different ideas of what's OK and what's not, me, I couldn't live anywhere that I couldn't see the sunset: the first house we had after we got married had a view of The Mountain and the sunrise but I never did learn to read the weather from the sky there.
